Royals Snap Winless Streak with Late Push in Elmira, 3-2

Reading Royals News Release

Elmira, NY - The Reading Royals (Win, 7-8-1-1 16) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, defeated the Elmira Jackals (Loss, 2-10-2-0 6), 3-2, at First Arena in Elmira, New York.

In the Royals first trip of the season to First Arena in Elmira, Reading came back from a pair of deficits-the second time on the strength of a pair of late third period goals to snap a seven game winless streak. Elmira had taken their second lead of the game at 2-1 early in the third, but a power play goal by Olivier Labelle with 3:15 left in regulation and the first goal of the season by Jesper Pettersson fifty-seven seconds later served to secure a win for the first time since November 5. The loss for Elmira stretched the Jackals current winless streak to ten (0-8-2-0).

Elmira struck first 6:36 into the game on a multi-shot rebound put-back by Greg Betzold. After a face-off in Reading's defensive zone, the Jackals' Tyson Fawcett took a swipe towards the Royals' net. That bid did not make it through, but fell to Kenton Miller on the doorstep. Goaltender Mark Dekanich rejected Miller's bid from in tight, but the rebound kicked directly back to Betzold, who buried the quick put-back for his second of the year.

Reading tied the game 16:21 into the first when Ian Watters freed defenseman Nick Luukko for a charge up ice from the Reading defensive zone. Luukko turned on the jets, carried through the neutral zone down the left side into the offensive end, got the edge on an Elmira defender, and cut to the top of the crease, where he was able to stuff the puck around goaltender Jason Kasdorf for his fourth of the season.

After a scoreless second, Elmira gained their second lead of the game directly at the conclusion of Reading's first power play chance of the game early in the third. Tyson Fawcett, who had served the minor penalty, stepped out of the penalty box and onto a puck at the offensive blue line. Fawcett carried into the offensive zone and dropped the puck to the middle, where the trailer-defenseman Ian LeBeouf-stepped up and ripped a low bullet that blew under and through Dekanich for his first of the year.

Reading re-tied the game at two with 3:15 left in regulation on the team's third power play chance of the night when Michael Boivin fired a shot from the right point that was deflected by Olivier Labelle, who was battling for position in the mid-slot, causing the puck to change directions back against the grain, slipping through Kasdorf for his seventh of the season-four of which have come on the power play.

Fifty-seven seconds later the Royals got what proved to be the game winner, when Jesper Pettersson stepped off the right point and found a soft spot in the mid-slot for a diagonal-up feed from Justin Crandall, who had gained possession deep on the left side. Pettersson didn't waste the chance, ripping a snap shot into the upper left corner of the net for his first of the season, which served to push the Royals' record at first Arena to 18-2-2 in the last twenty-two games in Elmira since March of 2013.
