Royals Roll in Opening Salvo in Elmira, 4-1

January 10, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Elmira, NY - The Reading Royals (win, 17-12-1-035) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, defeated the Elmira Jackals (loss, 10-17-2-224), 4-1, at First Arena in Elmira, New York.

The Royals opened a three game (in three days) series against the Jackals with back-to-back goals from Aaron Gens and Julien Cayer mid-way in the first-and then back-to-back goals from Domenic Monardo and Ethan Cox early in the second-to build a 4-0 lead, which the team would hold down the stretch despite a late goal from Jackals, who broke up the shutout bid of goaltender Brandon Anderson (win, 6-6-1-0, 18/19) with just 3:37 left in regulation. For Reading, the road victory pushed the team's record to 10-4-1-0 on the opposition's ice this year.

Gens got the Royals on the board 11:56 into the first when goaltender Scott Greenham (loss, 6-9-1-1, 10/14 in 22:07) rejected a bid from the right half wall by Brandon Blandina but kicked the rebound into the left circle, where Gens drilled a quick, hard one-time wrist shot over Greenham's outstretched right arm for his fourth of the year.

Forty-nine seconds later, Julien Cayer found himself with the puck wide open and all alone at the top of the right circle. Cayer ripped a low, hard shot that went under and through Greenham for his first of the year.

1:28 into the second, Domenic Monardo registered his team leading eleventh of the year. Michal Cajkovsky teed one up from the top of the left circle that ricocheted first off the body of a Jackal defender and then off the body of Monardo and into the net.

Thirty-nine seconds after that Monardo threaded a beautiful diagonal down wrist pass from the high slot to a charging Ethan Cox, who was cutting right to left across the top of the crease. Cox angled the puck up and over Greenham for his fourth of the year. That chased Greenham. Maxime Clermont (no decision, 14/14 in 37:53) came on in substitution and was perfect from that point forward, which included making several spectacular saves to keep it from being a more-lopsided win.

The Jackals broke through at 16:23 of the third, when Anderson was trying to clear a puck from behind the Royals' net and sent it directly to Dane Walters in the right circle. As Anderson was attempting to scramble back into the net, Walters fired it home for his second of the season. But that would prove too little, too late for the Jackals who fell to 1-6-2-0 in their last nine games.

The Royals and Jackals go at it again tomorrow (Saturday, January 11, 2013 @ 7:05 pm) at First Arena in Elmira, New York. The game night broadcast on CBS Sports Radio 1240 am and 98.5 will kick off with the Highmark Blue Shield Warm-Up Show at 6:35 pm on the Royals Broadcast Network. Friday's game, as with all Royals' road games this season, will be televised locally in Berks County, Pennsylvania, on BCTV courtesy of Boscov's Travel and Apple Vacations.
