News Release

SPRINGDALE, Ark. - The Kansas City Royals announced the promotion of right handed pitcher Christian Binford to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday. Binford ranks as a top 10 prospect in the Royals organization according to Baseball America, and ranks 11 by MLB.com.

A 30th round selection out of Mercersburg Acadamy in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, Binford has pitched like anything but a late round selection in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft. Since making his professional debut in 2012 for Rookie League Burlington, Binford has excelled at every level. He has recorded a 15-14 record across 45 minor league starts, including a 2.48 ERA to go along with a constantly improving strikeouts per nine innings pitched ratio, currently at 8.8.

In Binford's first full-season of professional baseball, he ranked third in the South Atlantic League in ERA and sixth in strikeouts earning him the promotion to High-A Wilmington to start the 2014 season.

In 14 starts for Wilmington this season, Binford has set 92 batters down on strikes in 82.2 innings pitched, along with a 5-4 record and a miniscule 2.40 ERA. He earns the mid-season promotion in July after a June in which he allowed five earned runs over four starts to the tune of a 1.75 ERA and two victories.

At 21 years old, Binford's next stop on the fast track towards Kansas City Royals' Kaufman Stadium will be Arvest Ballpark for the Naturals six-game homestand with the Midland RockHounds and Frisco RoughRiders. Binford will also represent the U.S. Team in the upcoming 2014 Futures Game.

The Naturals will send Mark Threlkeld to High-A Wilmington to make room on the active roster.

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals are the Double-A Texas League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The Naturals play at state-of-the-art Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Ark.
