Victoria Royals News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Friday night match-up at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Victoria Royals squared off against the Calgary Hitmen. The Royals started Coleman Vollrath in net, while the Hitmen countered with Chris Driedger.

The first period was a scoreless affair as both goaltenders turned away every shot they faced. The chance of the period came when Victoria's Jamie Crooks broke in alone shorthanded on Driedger. Crooks fired a shot blocker-side, but the Calgary netminder made the save to send the teams into the first intermission tied 0-0.

The Hitmen opened the scoring on a marker from Pavlo Padakin at 1:15 of the second period. Padakin collected Darian Henry's rebound on his backhand and beat Vollrath stick side. Victoria responded at 13:14 on the powerplay when Tyler Stahl netted his first goal as a Royal. Stahl blasted a slapshot from the left point that beat Driedger between the legs to draw the teams even. With less than a minute left in the frame, Victoria's 6'5", 238lb Keegan Kanzig squared off with Calgary's Jaynen Rissling, who stands at 6'4", 225lbs. It was a spirited scrap that saw the Royals' defender earn the decision. The Hitmen would grab the lead eight seconds from the buzzer when Elliot Peterson corralled a rebound off the end boards and found the back of the net. Peterson's goal gave the Hitmen a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.

Brady Brassart extended Calgary's lead at 2:40 of the third period when he released a snapshot off the left wing that beat Vollrath over the glove. Alex Roach added two more goals for the Hitmen to extend their lead to 5-1. Steven Hodges then extended his point streak to six games when he found the back of the net with less than two seconds to play. Hitmen 5 Royals 2.

Victoria went 1/5 20.0% on the powerplay, while Calgary was 2/8 25.0%. The Royals outshot the Hitmen 29-26.

The Royals now head to Medicine Hat for the final game of their seven game road trip. Puck drop against the Tigers is set for 7:30 p.m. MST. Victoria's next home game is slated for Friday, November 16th against the Everett Silvertips.
