Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night contest at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals went up against the Swift Current Broncos for the annual Teddy Bear Toss game. The Royals started Patrik Polivka in net, while the Broncos countered with Eetu Laurikainen.

The first period began as a physical, tight-checking affair. Victoria's first key opportunity came when Swift Current went down by two men at 10:47 of the frame. On the powerplay, Laurikainen stood tall and the Royals were unable to open the scoring. The Broncos were also unable to convert and the score remained deadlocked at zero heading into the first intermission.

Austin Carroll opened the scoring for the Royals at 1:51 of the middle frame. Carroll picked up the puck in the neutral zone before he deked through a Broncos' defenceman along the right wing. Carroll fired a wrist shot that got a piece of Laurikainen's blocker and trickled up and over the Broncos' goaltender and into the net. The teddy bears rained down on the ice after Carroll's fifth goal of the season. After the stuffed animals were swept off the ice, Brandon Magee promptly netted his 13th of the season at the 2:37 mark. Ben Walker took a pass in front of Swift Current's net which he left for Magee in the low slot. Magee buried a quick shot blocker side that gave the Royals a 2-0 lead. The two-goal advantage stood up after 40 minutes of play.

In what was a physical game, tension boiled over when Royals' defenceman Keegan Kanzig and Broncos' forward Daniel Dale squared off at 1:15 of the final period. Victoria played a defensively sound game, but Swift Current pulled to within one at 16:10 of the third. On the powerplay, Adam Lowry, son of Royals' Head Coach Dave Lowry, received a pass from Dillon Heatherington to the right of Polivka and sniped a wrist shot high glove side. The Broncos pulled their goalie for the extra attacker with 1:30 remaining in the game. Richard Nedomlel nearly tied the game with a shot from the point, but Polivka flashed the glove and the Royals went on to preserve the win. Victoria 2 Swift Current 1.

Victoria went 0/40.0% on the powerplay, while Swift Current went 1/2 50.0%. The Broncos outshot the Royals 33-30.

The Royals will now travel to Seattle to play the Thunderbirds on Tuesday, December 11th. Victoria then heads to Alberta to face Red Deer and Edmonton before the Christmas break.
