Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - A bases-loaded walk in the 7th inning fueled the Round Rock Express (3-2) to a 5-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds (2-3), giving the E-Train a big series win over the defending American Southern Division champions.
Express reliever LHP Wesley Wright (1-0, 0.00) earned the win after allowing just one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Sounds RHP Aaron Kurcz (1-1, 4.91) unraveled in the seventh, giving up a run on two hits while striking out two in 1.2 innings on the mound.
Neither starting pitcher recorded a decision, however Round Rock benefited from six solid innings out of starter RHP Eddie Gamboa (0-0, 0.00). The knuckleballer allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Nashville starter RHP Chris Smith (0-0, 4.91) didn't make it out of the fourth, surrendering three runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings.
After three innings of scoreless baseball, both teams jumped on the board in the fourth. Nashville started the scoring with a Franklin Barreto single followed shortly by a two-run Renato Nunez home run.
Round Rock answered right back in the bottom of the frame. LF Cesar Puello and 1B Ronald Guzman recorded consecutive one-out base hits before 2B Luis Marte singled home Puello. In the next at-bat, SS Doug Bernier dropped a fly ball into center field to score Guzman. However, as Marte raced for third, a catching error by Nunez allowed the speedy infielder to race home, giving the E-Train a 4-3 advantage.
Express 3B Will Middlebrooks collected his third home run of the young season in the fifth inning, pushing the lead to 4-2. However, the visitors leveled the contest in the seventh. C Ryan Lavarnway opened the frame with a single, then advanced to third on a Kenny Wilson single two hitters later. An ensuing Barreto sacrifice fly left Lavarnway with enough time to sprint home with the game-tying run.
The E-Train regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. RF Preston Beck sparked the rally with a leadoff single, then DH Travis Snider followed up with a base hit of his own. Puello and Guzman teamed up again, this time for back-to-back walks, the latter of which scored the go-ahead run.
The Express now hit the road for the first time this season. Round Rock opens a week-long road trip with a four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday night. Game one is set to feature E-Train RHP Tyler Wagner (0-0, 0.00) up against Storm Chasers RHP Jonathan Dziedzic (0-1, 3.60). First pitch at Werner Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The E-Train returns home on Tuesday, April 18.
