Round Rock Express Stumble at Omaha 12-2
August 31, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. - Hours after being named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year, Omaha Storm Chasers starter Luis Mendoza picked up his 12th win of the season as Omaha defeated the Round Rock Express 12-2 in Wednesday night's PCL action at Werner Park.
Omaha inched closer to the American Northern Division title with the win, reducing its magic number over Memphis to one game. The American Northern Division winner will face Round Rock in the best-of-five American Conference Championship Series, which begins with games Sept. 7-8 at The Dell Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
Round Rock got to Mendoza for two first-inning runs on three consecutive doubles to open the game, but it was all Omaha after that. The Express managed only three hits the rest of the way, two of which were from Esteban German, who had the first of Round Rock's three doubles in the first.
The Storm Chasers scored a run in the bottom of the first and then sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run second inning. Omaha pulled away with three runs in the third before tacking on a Jarrod Dyson solo homer in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth.
Mendoza (12-5) allowed only one hit after the three consecutive first-inning doubles - a two-out Guilder Rodriguez single in the fourth. He walked three and struck out six over 6.0 innings. Zach Miner surrendered a hit and a walk with one strikeout over 2.0 scoreless innings, and Federico Castaneda worked around a leadoff German single for a scoreless ninth.
Express starter Eric Hurley (8-3) suffered his second loss in as many starts. He allowed 10 runs on 13 hits and three walks through 5.0 innings with two strikeouts.
German was 3-for-4 and moved into a tie with Tommy Manzella (2009) for second place on Round Rock's single-season hits list with 153. Mark Saccomanno owns the franchise record of 157 from the 2008 season. Andres Blanco and Brad Nelson produced the RBI doubles in the first.
Lorenzo Cain was the offensive star for Omaha, going 5-for-5 with three RBI and a stolen base. Yamaico Navarro and Kurt Mertins both had three-games, while Dyson and Irving Falu had two hits and three RBI each.
Round Rock and Omaha conclude their four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch Thursday at Werner Park. Left-hander Martin Perez (3-4, 6.34 ERA) takes the mound for the Express, while right-hander Jeff Suppan (11-7, 4.54 ERA) is slated to go for the Storm Chasers.
