Round Rock Express Blanked in Opener at New Orleans 4-0

Round Rock Express News Release
METAIRIE, La. - Tom Koehler, Jay Buente and Steven Cishek combined on a four-hit shutout as the New Orleans Zephyrs blanked the Round Rock Express 4-0 in Friday night's Pacific Coast League series opener at Zephyr Field. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak and denied Round Rock its first five-game streak since May 1-5, 2009.
Josh Kroeger's one-out solo homer in the bottom of the second inning proved to be the game-winning hit. The score remained 1-0 until the seventh when Joe Thurston and Kroeger coaxed consecutive one-out walks ahead of Bryan Petersen's two-out, three-run homer.
Koehler (1-0) scattered three hits with no walks and five strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Buente allowed a hit and a walk with four strikeouts over 2.0 innings, while Cishek worked around a two-out walk with one strikeout for a no-hit, scoreless ninth. The Express (5-4) suffered their first shutout of the season.
Express starter Brett Tomko (0-2) suffered the tough-luck loss. He allowed three runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Tomko left the game after the consecutive walks in the seventh. Yhency Brazoban struck out the first batter he faced but then surrendered Petersen's homer. Brazoban struck out two in 1.2 innings of work.
Brian Barden reached with two outs in the top of the first on a ball that hit off the glove of New Orleans (6-3) left fielder Vinny Rottino, who was on a near full sprint, in deep left-center. The play was ruled a two-base error and started an 0-for-4 night for Barden, who twice was robbed on stellar defensive plays by shortstop Ozzie Martinez. That snapped Barden's multiple-season, 28-game hitting streak that was the longest active streak in the PCL.
Round Rock got a leadoff single off the base of the left-field wall from Taylor Teagarden in the third, but he was stranded at second. Chad Tracy doubled with one out in the fourth but was stranded at third. Joey Butler led off the fifth with a double but was stranded there. A walk, a wild pitch and a two-out single put runners on the corners for the Express in the eighth, but Buente struck out Barden to quell the threat.
Round Rock and New Orleans continue their four-game series Saturday with a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at Zephyr Field. Right-hander Tanner Scheppers, who was activated from the seven-day disabled list Friday, will make his first outing of the season for the Express. Right-hander Adalberto Mendez (1-0, 1.65 ERA) is slated to start for the Zephyrs.
