Roughnecks Top Golden Hurricane 1-0 in Preseason Friendly

The Tulsa Roughnecks played their annual preseason match against the University of Tulsa Saturday afternoon and recorded a 1-0 victory at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The lone goal of the match came in 82nd minute from TRFC trialist Wiulito Fernandes.

The match was entertaining for fans despite a constant 25-30 m.p.h. wind that blew throughout the 90 minutes of play.

Roughnecks head coach David Vaudreuil opened the game with several of his signed players on the field, and the side produced several scoring chances despite attacking into the strong breeze.

Ian Svantesson attacking in the first half.

Striker Ian Svantesson was active up front for TRFC, running onto service from Juan Caffa. He nearly opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but his curling shot went just wide of the post.

Two minutes later, another shot from Svantesson struck the woodwork.

The Golden Hurricane also threatened, forcing a pair of saves from TRFC trialist goalkeeper Bryan Byers. Byers, who spent last season with Rayo OKC, was forced into action in both the 17th minute and the 40th minute.

At the other end, Joaquin Rivas had a chance to put the Roughnecks in front, but his right-footed shot just before halftime was deflected wide of goal.

With the wind at their backs, Roughnecks reserves threatened through much of the second 45 minutes, striking the crossbar once and the post another time.

Fernandes finally found the back of the net when he was left with space at the top of the penalty area. His calmly struck, right-footed shot beat the keeper for the lone goal of the match.

Vaudreuil was mostly pleased with what he saw from his side. "In general, I thought it was a good outing for us," he said. "The competition was good, the field was big and we were forced to work hard. It's obvious that we need fitness."

"Our number one goal was not to concede, and our team defense was good," he added. "That part, I was very happy about. Offensively, we were pretty dangerous at times. In the first half, we had a couple of chances and then in the second half we created several great chances, hitting the post twice and then the goal."

Newcomers Jaime Ayala and Francisco Ugarte, who both arrived in Tulsa just this week, both saw action for the Roughnecks. Ayala started and played approximately 50 minutes, while Ugarte played the final 20.

Kosuke Kimura and Brady Ballew were not available due to minor injuries.

The Roughnecks will quickly be back in action, travelling to Chicago for a Monday afternoon meeting with their new MLS affiliate the Chicago Fire. Kickoff is slated for noon. Live updates will be provided through the Roughnecks Twitter feed.

The Roughnecks are scheduled to open the 2017 USL regular season on Saturday, March 25 when they host Colorado Springs at ONEOK Field. A number of ticket packages for the 2017 season are available at RoughnecksFC.com. Fans can also inquire about tickets by calling (918)744-5901.
