Roughnecks suffer another late collapse

Calgary Roughnecks News Release

The Calgary Roughnecks fell apart in the fourth quarter in Portland as the LumberJax rallied for a 13-9 win.

Lewis Ratcliff scored three times and added an assist, all in the third quarter, as the Roughnecks built up an 8-6 lead.

Playing in front of their home fans at the Rose Garden, the LumberJax (3-5) refused to quit and reeled off seven straight goals, including the game winner by 'Dangerous' Dan Dawson, who finished the contest with two goals and five assists.

Nolan Heavenor scored twice for the Roughnecks (2-5), who have now lost three straight games.

It's not going to get any easier for the Riggers, who will host the 5-1 Colorado Mammoth at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Kaleb Toth, Curt Malawsky, Scott Ranger and Jeff Shattler also scored for Calgary, while goalie Pat Campbell was force making 35 of 47 saves to keep the Riggers in the game.

For Portland, Peter Morgan tallied a hat trick, Brodie Merrill had two goals and three assists while Derek Malawsky scored once and set up four others. Richard Morgan scored twice to double his goal output for the season, while Spencer Martin, Matt Holman and Cory Conway added singles.

Portland led 2-1 after the first quarter on goals by Derek Malawsky and Peter Morgan, while Toth notched the lone Calgary goal.

The score actually flattered the Roughnecks, who had to kill off a five-minute major penalty to Chris Seller for high-sticking. Campbell made several fine saves including on close-in attempts by Peter Morgan and Ryan Powell.

In the second quarter, Heavenor scored twice, once with Calgary killing a penalty, while a shot by Ranger also found the twine behind Portland goalie Matt King as the Riggers built up a 4-2 lead.

Richard Morgan pulled Portland within one before the first-half intermission as the LumberJax held a 23-16 shot advantage over the Roughnecks.

After the break, Ratcliff and Curt Malawsky scored goals 55 seconds apart to give Calgary a three-goal advantage. Ratcliff scored twice more in the third to put Calgary up 8-6.

After Peter Morgan pulled Portland within one late in the third, Holman tied the game at 8-8 when he picked a rebound out of mid-air and quickly snapped it past Campbell.

Martin then put the Jax up by a goal when his shot snuck through Campbell's legs before Dawson bounced a shot off the turf and into the goal behind Campbell to put Portland up by a pair.

While the LumberJax kept pressing, the Roughnecks looked like a tired team and couldn't mount any sort of pressure going the other way.

After goals by Peter Morgan and Conway, Merrill scored an empty-netter before Shattler counted a late goal for Calgary to round out the scoring.
