The Tulsa Roughnecks saw a three-match unbeaten streak end Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to the Oklahoma City Energy at Taft Stadium. The loss was the first this season for the Roughnecks to their state rivals. TRFC had already clinched the 2017 Black Gold Derby with two victories earlier this season over the Energy.

Sunday's match got off to a dream start for Oklahoma City. Less than five minutes after the opening whistle, Miguel Gonzalez beat defender Bradley Bourgeois to long ball from Juan Guzman and slotted his shot into the far corner of the net from close range. The shot left TRFC goalkeeper Fabian Cerda with no chance and gave the Energy the quick 1-0 advantage.

The Energy doubled their lead just eight minutes later when Jose Barril was given too much space in midfield. Barril was allowed to dribble to the edge of the penalty area where he unleashed a left-footed blast into the upper corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Tulsa came close to cutting its deficit in half in the 24th minute when Joey Calistri fed Joaquin Rivas into space in the box, but OKC goalkeeper Cody Laurendi came sliding out to make the save on the shot from Rivas. With the goal open, the rebound caromed toward the back post, but it rolled just out of the reach of Ian Svantesson who tried to tap it into the empty net.

The Roughnecks continued to dominate possession and had other chances to get their first goal. In the 39th minute, defender Kosuke Kimura got free in the box, but a sliding tackle took him off the ball before he could take a shot.

Later, Calistri beat his defender near the goal line, but his threatening cross was just behind Svantesson in front of goal.

After the break, the Energy was content to protect its two-goal lead, and the Roughnecks were unable to find a way back into the game.

Tulsa's best chance came late in the half when Svantesson headed a shot off a long cross from midfield, but Laurendi dove to make the save.

The Roughnecks were able to generate only eight total shots in the game despite owning 2/3 of possession in the match.

With the defeat, Tulsa remained on 40 points for the season and stayed in the sixth spot in the USL's Western Conference standings with a 12-11-4 record. The Energy climbed into the eighth and final playoff spot with the win, improving to 37 points with a 10-10-7 record.

The Roughnecks will hope to clinch their first-ever playoff berth when they close the season with four of their final five matches at home. That stretch will begin next weekend when they are home for the first time in over a month to host the LA Galaxy II on Saturday, September 23. Kickoff at ONEOK Field is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
