Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - Despite rainy, windy, and chilly conditions for the 2013 home opener at Parkview Field Thursday night, TinCaps starter Joe Ross battled the elements and the Lake County Captains, leading Fort Wayne to a 4-0 win in five-and-a-half-innings. The righthander struck out eight Captains hitters, earning his second win of the year.

Ross (2-0), making his second start of the season, allowed just one hit over five innings against a Lake County (1-5) lineup that entered the game hitting a collective .220. Now in two starts, Ross has worked 10 innings, surrendered two hits, walked two batters and fanned 12.

Fort Wayne (4-3), after being retired in order in the first inning, got its first run on a Luis Tejada RBI single in the second inning. It was Tejada's first RBI of the season and his second base hit in the team's seven games. Lake County starter Luis DeJesus (0-1) encountered further trouble, little of it self-induced in the fourth. After allowing a bunt single to Dane Phillips to start the inning, the TinCaps' Gabriel Quintana reached on an error by second baseman Robel Garcia. Phillips moved to third on the play and scored one batter later as Tejada lofted a sacrifice fly to center field.

Brian Adams followed with a double, continuing the offensive surge by Fort Wayne. Two batters later, Alberth Martinez hit a ground ball to third, which skipped under the glove of Erik Gonzalez, permitting both Quintana and Adams to score, giving Fort Wayne a 4-0 edge. All three of the runs against DeJesus went unearned in that inning.

The game began at 7:15 p.m. and was subject to a 27-minute rain delay, before being called off due to rain at 9:18 p.m.

Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The scheduled starters are Max Fried for Fort Wayne and Ryan Merritt for Lake County. The game can be seen on XFINITY Channel 81 and can be heard on The Fan 1380 or TheFanFortWayne.com.
