ROSARIO, GOLDEYES BLANK SAINTS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 ST. PAUL, MN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (59-36) beat the St. Paul Saints 2-0 at CHS Field on Wednesday night.
Goldeyes' starting pitcher Charle Rosario (10-5) worked six and two-thirds shutout innings to earn his 10th win of the year. Rosario scattered seven hits, walked one, and struck out nine. Rosario becomes just the sixth pitcher in American Association history to post three seasons of 10 or more victories.
"Charle was great for us again tonight," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth. "It's good when he can mix up all of his pitches and disrupt the timing on the hitters. The more you can keep them off balance, the better."
In the top of the fourth inning, Reggie Abercrombie drew a one-out walk and went first to third on a single to centre from Shawn Pleffner. David Bergin lifted a sacrifice fly to centre that scored Abercrombie with the game's first run.
"We did enough offensively against a guy we had never seen before," said Vaeth. "(Gutierrez) was effectively wild. Just credit to the boys for continuing to grind."
Rosario stranded the tying run on second in the bottom of the fourth, and worked around a one-out single in the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts of Tim Colwell and JJ Gould.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints put runners on the corners with one out before Rosario struck out Kes Carter on a full count off-speed pitch.
Mitch Delfino led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and was sacrificed to second by Maxx Garrett. After Rosario struck out Colwell for the second out, Victor Capellan was summoned from the bullpen and retired Jon Kristoffersen on a groundout to first.
Capellan threw a perfect bottom of the eighth on just five pitches to keep the Goldeyes in front 1-0.
Bergin led off the top of the ninth with a walk. After Jordan Ebert pinch ran for Bergin, Wes Darvill and Mason Katz hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Two batters later, Casey Turgeon lined a single to left against left-handed reliever Chandler Hawkins to drive in Ebert with an insurance run.
"(Turgeon) got a good pitch to hit," added Vaeth. "There was some familiarity there, being a long-time teammate of Hawkins. In that kind of situation, you're looking for a good pitch early in the count, and he put a good swing on it."
Ryan Chaffee took over in the bottom of the ninth and worked a scoreless inning to earn his 21st save. The 21 saves now rank second all-time on the Goldeyes' single-season list. Oscar Montero holds the franchise record with 22 saves in 2004.
Andrew Gutierrez (0-1) started for the Saints and took the loss, allowing one earned run on two hits over six innings. Gutierrez walked six and struck out two.
Rosario joins Jarrett Gardner (2007-09), Ben Moore (2008, 2010-11, 2013), Derek Blacksher (2009, 2012-13), Kyle Ruwe (2006-07, 2013), and Robert Coe (2012, 2015-16) as the only pitchers in the 12-year history of the league to win 10 or more games in three different seasons. Rosario won 12 games for the Gary SouthShore RailCats in 2015, and 11 more for the RailCats last year. Rosario also tied an American Association single-season record by making his 24th start. Adam Champion made 24 starts for the Sioux Falls Canaries in 2013, while Rosario made 24 starts for the RailCats in 2016.
