Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Fernando Romero dealt seven scoreless frames to lead the Fort Myers Miracle to a second consecutive 1-0 shutout win over the Palm Beach Cardinals and complete a series sweep at Hammond Stadium on Thursday night.

Romero (5-2) faced just two batters over the minimum and tallied nine strikeouts with no walks. Allowing just two infield singles, Romero threw 87 pitches and 60 for strikes while recording seven outs on the ground and only one in the air.

Palm Beach starter Sandy Alcantara was nearly as effective for the Cardinals. After keeping the Miracle off the board for six innings, Alcantara (0-3) slipped in the seventh. With one out, Joe Maloney cracked a double into center field on a first pitch fastball. Alcaranta rallied to strikeout Max Murphy, but Christian Ibarra bounced a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a single. Hustling around third base, Maloney slid into home safely after Oscar Mercado's accurate one-hop throw from center field bounced past catcher Steve Bean, 1-0.

With Romero as the pitcher of record, the Miracle went to the bullpen and called on Luke Westphal. Striking out the first hitter, Westphal walked Orlando Olivera, but recovered by recording a strike him out, throw him out double play to end the frame.

Confesor Lara entered for the ninth and surrendered a lead-off hit, but retired the side to record his third save of the season and first with the Miracle.

For the third time this season, the Miracle completed a series sweep of the Cardinals and now have a 13-2 record against Palm Beach. Fort Myers is one game out of first place with 10 games remaining on the regular season schedule.

The Miracle (66-63, 32-28) begin a six-game road trip to Roger Dean Stadium with the first of a three-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Dereck Rodriguez (1-1) gets the nod for the Miracle opposite Jupiter starter Scott Squier (4-0). The game will not be broadcast and fans can follow the action, pitch-by-pitch on MiLB Gameday.
