Rocks squeak by Kinston in pitchers' duel, 6-0

Wilmington, DE --- Tommy Hottovy, Felix Romero and Ryan Schroyer combined on a one-hit shutout of the Kinston Indians, as the Blue Rocks took the series opener, 6-0, on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium before a crowd of 6,537. It was the fourth time this season that Wilmington has shutout Kinston. The win snapped a six-game losing streak.

Hottovy, making his first start since July 7, threw three perfect innings against the Indians to set the tone for the night. He struck out two batters, and ended a stretch of four straight losses, dating back to June 19. He needed just 34 pitches (27 strikes) to dispatch the nine batters he faced.

Romero (3-5) came on in the fourth inning and plowed through the Kinston lineup. He allowed the Indians' only hit of the game, a two-out single to Rodney Choy Foo in the fourth inning. The righthander struck out five, walked none, and hit two batters in his four innings.

Schroyer sealed the deal for the Blue Rocks, as he closed out the game with two hitless innings to pick up his first Carolina League save.

Wilmington picked up a run in the first inning off Kinston starter Tom Mastny (5-3), as Brant Ust brought home Matt Van Der Bosch with an RBI single.

There would be no scoring in the game until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Wilmington sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five insurance runs (two earned) off reliever Chris Niesel.

The one-hitter was the second of the season for the Blue Rocks. Coincidentally, their other one-hitter was against Kinston on July 8.

The two teams will meet again Friday night at Frawley Stadium, as Luis Mendoza (3-4, 5.63) makes his return to the Blue Rocks against Nick Pesco (6-9, 4.05). Game Notes: Ian Bladergroen (3-for-4) had his second consecutive three-hit game for the Blue Rocks.

Bryan Pritz (2-for-3) extended his hitting streak to seven games.

The Blue Rocks pitchers needed just 102 combined pitches to shut down the K-Tribe, and did not walk a batter.
