July 2, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (31-48/4-6) kept hanging around against the Winston-Salem Dash (32-47/4-5) on Saturday night and finally pushed through by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to a 6-3 win. The rally was helped along by three separate extra base hits as Robert Pehl tied the game with a double and Samir Duenez's two-run triple provided more than enough insurance for the Blue Crew.

It did not start well though for the Rocks. For the sixth time on the homestand the boys from Frawley went down early. The Dash scored a pair of runs on a first inning single by Nick Basto. The Rocks came right back though with a run of their own when Raul Mondesi tripled and came home on a groundout by Alfredo Escalera. After the rough first inning by Foster Griffin, the lefty settled down and the Rocks rewarded him by tying the game up in the third on yet another groundout by Escalera. The game remained tied until the top of the sixth when Basto launched a ball over everything in left and put the Dash ahead 3-2.

That is how the game stayed until the Blue Crew picked things up in the seventh. It all began when Austin Bailey doubled down the right field. He did not have to wait on the second base bag for long as Pehl ripped his own double into the right-center field gap to tie the game at threes. Cody Jones was asked to lay down a bunt and the speedy centerfielder dropped one down perfectly between the mound and home and ended up reaching to put men at the corners with nobody out. Mondesi followed with a dribbler to second where the only play was to first and the Rocks took their first lead of the game 4-3. Although Escalera struck out in the next at bat he reached when the ball rolled away from the catcher. With runners at first and third, Duenez hooked a 2-2 offering down the corner in right to plate both Jones and Escalera and give the Blue Crew two insurance runs and a 6-3 advantage.

While Griffin went the first six frames, he had to hand the ball over to Derek Gordon. Gordon did not disappoint. The right breezed through the seventh, eighth and ninth to secure the win and move to a perfect 2-0 on the season.

The Dash starter Thad Lowry winds up with the loss and drops to 6-5 on the year. The Rocks have secured at least a split in the series and will go for the win on Sunday with the special 6:05 p.m. start. The Rocks will have RHP Zach Lovvorn (0-9, 3.74) going against RHP RHP Kelvis Valerio (1-3, 3.72).
