Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Frederick, MD - The Wilmington Blue Rocks (40-36/1-5) offense was stymied to just three hits in a 5-1 defeat against the Frederick Keys (33-42/2-4) at Nymeo Field Tuesday night. Keys' starter Keegan Akin flirted with a no-hitter all the way into the eighth inning before Cody Jones broke it up with a two-out single for one of the three hits for the Rocks. With the loss, the Rocks have dropped their fourth straight and five of their first six games to start the second half after rattling off six straight wins to close out the first half of the 2017 season.

Frederick jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, using the long ball as Ryan Mountcastle hit a solo blast in the first inning while Ademar Rifaela added a two-run shot of his own in the third inning. In the fifth, the Keys added another run on a throwing error to make it 4-0 before Shane Hoelscher drove in the fifth run for the Keys with an RBI single.

Akin was masterful on the mound for the Keys as the Rocks couldn't solve the southpaw for 7 2/3 innings of the ballgame. With two outs in the eighth, Jones singled to break up the no-hit effort from Akin. Wilmington would add two more hits, including another extra-base hit by Brandon Downes, and eventually avoided the shutout when Roman Collins brought in a run after bouncing into a double play to give the game its final score of 5-1.

Wilmington continues the four-game series with Frederick on Wednesday, June 28 with first pitch slated for 7:00 p.m. at Nymeo Field. Righty Jared Ruxer (4-1, 3.05 ERA) makes the start for the Blue Rocks while right-hander Cristian Alvarado (3-7, 6.78 ERA) climbs the hill for the Keys. Fans can listen to the game as Matt Janus will have the call on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
