RockHounds Edged by Corpus Christi, 5-3

April 27, 2017 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

After appearing in 124 big league games with Houston over the 2014 and 2015 seasons (and spending all of last year at the Triple-A level), you couldn't blame Jon Singleton for being less than pleased at finding himself back at Double-A in 2017. If he is frustrated, he took it out on a pitch from Heath Fillmyer in the last of the first inning on Wednesday, crushing a two-run home run to right, a blast that traveled 424 feet.

When all was said and done, Singleton's monster shot was the difference in Corpus Christi's 5-3 win over the RockHounds, the Hooks' second straight win after dropping the series opener 9-0 to the 'Hounds.

Max Schrock 's solo home run in the second brought the RockHounds to within 2-1 and after the Hooks manufactured a run (keyed by Garrett Stubbs' leadoff double) in the fourth the 'Hounds again drew within a run in the top of the fifth. J.C. Rodriguez collected his first hit at the Double-A level, a double down the left field line, and scored on J.P. Sportman 's sixth RBI of the series, a single to center.

Stubbs again started a Hooks one-run rally with a single in the sixth and J.D. Davis belting a solo home run to left field in the eighth.

The RockHounds had two baserunners in the seventh and eighth (on two walks in each inning) and again in the ninth. Richie Martin doubled down the left field line and Rodriguez's second hit of the game, an opposite field single to right, put runners at first and third. The 'Hounds, however, scored only once in the three chances, with Martin scoring on an around the horn double play (leaving the bases empty) in the ninth.

Quick Notes:

B.J. Boyd's league-high 13-game hit streak (and his 14-game on-base streak) went by the boards in the loss, with Boyd's finishing the night 0-for-4. Moments before crushing his home run in the last of the first, Hooks first baseman Jon Singleton made a nice play on a sharply hit ball off Boyd's bat. Boyd also lined out sharply to right in the third.

Richie Martin's ninth-inning double extended his hitting streak to eight games (9-for-31, .290) and his on-base streak to 11 games (.263 AVG / .409 OBP).

Joe Bennie (2-for-3, walk) has hit in seven straight games (9-for-23, .391) with eight walks in that span (on-base in 17-of-31 plate appearances, .548 OBP).

The RockHounds conclude the first half of their eight-game road trip, wrapping up a four-game set with the Hooks on Thursday night at 7:05 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. The 'Hounds will then travel on to San Antonio to open a four-game series with the Missions on Friday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium.

Right-hander Josh James (2-0, 2.08) gets the start in Thursday's series finale for the Hooks, with the RockHounds sending the tandem of right-handers Ben Bracewell (0-1, 4.50) and Kyle Friedrichs (0-2, 7.50) to the hill.

The RockHounds are back at Security Bank Ballpark for an eight-game homestand from May 2-9.
