Rocket Men
January 16, 2017 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Thanks to a three-point night by Riley Sutter, as well as two point nights by Dominic Zwerger and Kevin Davis, the Everett Silvertips downed the Kelowna Rockets in a 5-4 victory in a Monday matinee at XFINITY Arena in WHL action.
The Tips have 64 points and are one point behind Regina for the top seed in the league, improving to 13-2-4 in their last nineteen games and 16-2-1 on home ice. It was truly a team effort as eight different players registered at least a point.
Early into the game, the Rockets' Cal Foote took an early interference penalty to put the Tips on the power play 1:16 into the game. At 2:55 Riley Sutter set Kevin Davis up with the point shot to make it 1-0 Tips.
Very shortly after, the Rockets tied it up at 4:05 as Lucas Johansen went high glove side on Carter Hart to make it 1-1. Devon Skoleski set up Bryce Kindopp with a beauty of a shot from the faceoff circle to make the game 2-1 at 5:50. Orrin Centazzo took a tripping penalty at 6:07 but the penalty kill units came up big and was able to limit the chances for the Rockets.
At 12:21 Jack Cowell was able to get a puck past Carter Hart as Hart fell on his back before the whistle could be blown to make it 2-2. Kole Lind took an interference penalty at 13:27 which gave Everett a brief power play until Kevin Davis took a high sticking penalty at 14:01. Neither team scored while on 5-on-4 or 4-on-4. At 18:22 Connor Dewar went five hole on Michael Herringer thanks to a nice pass by Wyatte Wylie, which gave the Tips a 3-2 lead. The lead was short lived as Calvin Thurkauf scored at 19:38 to tie things back up at 3-3. Kelowna had 12 shots versus Everett's 8 shots in the first.
The second period seemed to settle down in the beginning and both teams played fast and physical end-to-end hockey. At the 8:26 mark, Rodney Southam took a hooking penalty and Everett went on the power play. At 9:27 Dominic Zwerger roofed a shot past Michael Herringer to make it 4-3 and Brodan Salmond relieved Herringer for the rest of the afternoon. At 12:22 Zwerger and Southam exchanged crosschecking penalties after a disagreement which lead to 4-on-4 hockey for two minutes; neither team capitalized in those two minutes.
Reid Gardner and Calvin Thurkauf ran into each other at center ice and Gardner fell to the ice and was slow to get up; he ended up needing assistance to get off the ice and did not play for the rest of the game. Thomas Soustal took a slashing penalty at 17:44 and the Tips capitalized thanks to an easy tap in goal by Riley Sutter at 19:17 to make the score 5-4. Kelowna had 5 shots versus the Tips' 10 shots in the second.
The third period started off with the Tips on the power play as Rodney Southam took his third penalty of the evening at 1:53. The Tips had some chances but did not manage to get a puck past Salmond. Roughly a minute after Southam's penalty expired, Hilsendager took a high-sticking penalty to put Everett back on the power play at 4:58. Everett did not capitalize on the man advantage.
At 6:51, Dominic Zwerger took a slashing penalty giving Kelowna a power play. Thanks to the strong defensive work by the special teams and Carter Hart, the Rockets were not able to score on the power play. The game got interesting at the 13:56 mark as Conner Bruggink-Cate got a weird bounce past Hart to make it 5-4. The Tips stayed defensively sound and Hart was sharp for the remaining minutes (including a show stopping save on Tomas Soustal with less than 30 seconds left), giving Kelowna very little room and keeping them from getting quality scoring chances. Nick Berkley took an interference penalty at the 19:56 mark and the Tips were unable to capitalize on the four second power play. Kelowna had 12 shots versus Everett's 8 shots in the third.
Carter Hart's counterparts, Michael Herringer, made 7 saves and Brodan Salmond, made 14 saves.
The Silvertips will return with a game at Kent against the Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday at 7:05 PM PT (Fox Sports 1380 / WHL Live).
