Rock Cats Fall to Harrisburg

June 24, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1) - New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Harrisburg scored four runs in the eighth inning to erase an early lead by the Rock Cats as the Senators went onto to win, 5-3 on Wednesday night.

The Senators hammered relief pitcher Alex Burnett for four hits in the eighth. Edgardo Baez and pinch hitter Matthew Whitney started the inning off with consecutive singles before Luke Montz delivered an RBI double to left field. Burnett issued a walk to Ofilio Castro before Michael Daniel grounded into a force out that plated Whitney to tie the game, 3-3. Ian Desmond followed with another ground out that forced Daniel out at second and put runners on the corners. Leonard Davis then doubled to left field to knock in Castro and Desmond for the go-ahead runs.

The four-run outburst by Harrisburg overshadowed a hot start for the Rock Cats. The Rock Cats didn't take long to break out the lumber with three hits in the first inning. Brandon Roberts started things off with a base hit up the middle and Rene Tosoni followed with a double to right. Whit Robbins knocked in Roberts with a single to right but was thrown out at second trying to advance.

The hits continued in the second inning with a one-out single by Matt Moses. Yancarlos drew a walk before Allan de San Miguel drilled a triple to right field to plate two more runs for a 3-0 lead.

Carlos Gutierrez retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced before Marvin Lowrance slugged a solo homer over the right field wall with two outs in the fifth inning to put Harrisburg on the board, 3-1.

Gutierrez finished with one run on two hits and four strikeouts through five innings. Burnett (0-2) suffered the loss for the Rock Cats.

Luis Atilano scattered eight hits and walked four hits over six innings. He allowed all three runs but came away with the no decision. Josh Wilkie (2-1) picked up the win in relief with two scoreless innings and Dave Williams notched his second save of the season.
