Rochester Red Wings News Release

Rochester Red Wings (12-18) @ Toledo Mud Hens (8-23)

Fifth Third Field - Toledo, OH - 6:30 p.m.

LHP Andrew Albers (0-1, 4.18) vs. LHP Jose Alvarez (1-2, 1.29)

TODAY'S GAME: The Red Wings Western Division road swing continues on Monday as they open a 4-game set against the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) from Fifth-Third Field in Toledo, OH at 6:30 p.m. The Wings are coming off a series split against the Columbus Clippers after Sunday's 3-2 setback... Since a season-high 4-game winning streak April 24-27, the Wings have now alternated wins and losses their last 7 times out and currently sit in 5th place in the North -- 8.0 games back of Buffalo... Meanwhile, Toledo comes in with the worst record in the IL at 8-23 and are already 13.0 games behind Indianapolis in the West.

WITH A WIN TODAY, THE WINGS...:

-Will win their 10th straight game against the Mud Hens dating back to 6/14/11 and their 6th in a row at Fifth Third Field

-Will win their 4th series opener of the season and 3rd in a row... After losing first 5 openers, Wings are 3-1 in last 4

MORE FROM LAST NIGHT...:

-RHP Samuel Deduno made his first start of the 2013 season allowing one unearned run on 5 hits and 4 walks in 5.0 IP

-The Wings fell to 6-9 when scoring first -- the worst mark among the 14 teams in the IL (Wings are only team under .500)

-The Wings walked 5 batters matching their total from the previous 5 games... Deduno's 4 walks was just one less than what the Wings starting rotation had yielded the previous 8 games.

-The Red Wings extended their season-long streak of recording at least one extra-base hit to 14 games on Chris Colabello's 2nd inning double -- the only extra-base hit of the night for Rochester

VS. THE MUD HENS: The Red Wings swept the 2012 season series from Toledo winning all 8 games -- it is believed to be the first season series sweep against any opponent in franchise history and the first in the IL since Pawtucket went 8-0 against Richmond in 2006... Rochester earned the sweep last year outlasting the Mud Hens 10-9 in a 19-inning affair in the last game between the teams in 2012 on August 5. The game was the 3rd regular season contest in the IL that last 19 innings or more since 1985... Despite the sweep, Rochester is still just 38-42 against Toledo and 20-20 at Fifth Third Field since the beginning of the 2003.

CLEMENT IN COLUMBUS: A trip to Columbus was just what the doctor ordered for Wings DH Jeff Clement who went 5-for-11 (.455) with 2 home runs and 5 RBI while playing in 3 of the 4 games against the Clippers. His 2-homer game on Saturday was the 7th of his career and first since 7/4/12 vs. LOU with IND... Entering the series Clement was just 9-for-71 (.127) with one extra-base hit (double) and one RBI in his first 21 games of the season. He even endured an 0-for-19 stretch this season from 4/8-4/15.

IN A PINCH: Ray Olmedo's pinch-hit single in the 8th inning yesterday was just the 2nd hit by a Wings pinch hitter this season. Olmedo's double on 4/24 @ SYR was the other... Olmedo is 2-for-2 in pinch hitting spots this season while the rest of the team is 0-for-14.

THERE'S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: On Sunday RHP Virgil Vasquez made his first-ever relief appearance in affiliated baseball after 177 games started. He suffered the loss allowing 2 runs (one earned) on 3 hits in 1.1 innings... Vasquez did make 3 relief outings over the last 2 seasons pitching for Southern Maryland of the independent Atlantic League.

ALBERS & HYDE: The Red Wings are 2-3 in starts made by tonight's starter LHP Andrew Albers this season... Oddly, in the 2 games the Wings won, Albers has allowed 8 runs on 13 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings (9.00 ERA). In the 3 losses, the southpaw has yielded just 3 runs on 15 hits and one walk in 15.2 innings pitched (1.72 ERA).

-In his last GS, Albers recorded his first quality start of the season allowing 2 ER in 6 IP despite suffering his first loss of the year... In that game Albers struck out a tied for career-high 7 hitters.

CLETE COOLED: Red Wings OF Clete Thomas saw his season-high 9-game hit streak halted after an 0-for-4 afternoon on Sunday... Still, over his 9-game tear Thomas hit .486 (17-for-35) including a 13-for-27 stretch with 2 doubles, 4 homers and 6 runs scored over the last 6 games of the streak (4 straight multi-hit games and 5 of 6)... Currently he still ranks 3rd in the IL in average (.365), 2nd in OBP (.453) and 2nd in SLG (.662).
