Rochester Red Wings News Release

Buffalo Bisons (15-5) @ Rochester Red Wings (8-14)

Frontier Field - Rochester, N.Y. - 1:05 p.m.

RHP Buddy Carlyle (1-0, 7.88) vs. RHP Kyle Gibson (0-3, 4.43)

TODAY'S GAME: Fresh off their first series win of the 2013 season over the Syracuse Chiefs and riding a 3-game winning streak, the Wings return to Frontier Field to open a 4-game series against the first-place Buffalo Bisons on Saturday afternoon. After beginning the season 2-11 - the worst start for a Red Wings team since at least 1940 - Rochester has rebounded to win 6 of their last 9 games. Still, they haven't been able to gain much ground as the Bisons have won 11 of their last 12 games and sit 3.0 games clear of Pawtucket atop the IL North. The Bisons have one 3 of 4 against the Red Wings this season including splitting a 2-game series here April 6-7... After the 4-game series, the Wings will hit the road for an 8-game road trip in Columbus (May 2-5) and Toledo (May 6-9).

WITH A WIN TONIGHT..:

-The Wings will have their first 4-game winning streak of the season and first since a 7-game streak, 7/29-8/5/12

-And a loss by either Syracuse (vs DUR) or Lehigh Valley (@ LOU), the Wings will move out of last place in the IL North -- where they have been since April 13.

BREAKING OUT THE BATS: The Wings scored a total of 31 runs over their 4-game series in Syracuse -- the Red Wings had scored a total of 28 runs combined in their last 14 games dating back to 4/8... Rochester collected 50 hits in the 4-game set just 3 less than they had total (53 hits) over their entire 8-game homestand prior to the series... Furthermore, the Wings recorded 19 extra-base hits against Syracuse matching their total from the previous 14 games.

-Even with 8 doubles over the last 2 games, the Wings are still tied for last in the IL with 26 doubles on the season. However, the Wings went from last in the IL in extra base hits on Tuesday to 11th entering play Saturday.

-The Wings scored 10 or more runs in back-to-back games on 4/24 & 4/25 for the first time since 6/27-6/28/07 @ DUR

BERNIER'S ON-BASE, AGAIN!: Red Wings shortstop, Doug Bernier, has reached base safely in 11 of his last 15 plate appearances dating back to the 13th inning of Tuesday night's game in Syracuse. Over that stretch, he is 8-for-11 - including a 5-for-5 night on Thursday - with 3 walks and a sacrifice bunt. The 5 hits set a career high for Bernier who previously collected 4 hits on 5 different occasions (last: 7/4/11). It also was the most hits in a game by a Red Wings player since Rene Tosoni had 5 hits on 5/21/12 vs GWN... Bernier also tied a career high with 4 RBI on Thursday -- which he had done on 4 previous occasions (last: 7/25/11).

-Bernier is 10-for-21 over the last 7 games and has seen his average rise from .160 on 4/18 to .304 entering play today... His on-base percentage has risen from .300 to .429 over that span.

UNLUCKY NUMBER 6?: The Red Wings have had 5 players with a 5-game hitting streak this season but thus far no Wings player has been able to extend his streak to 6 games... C Chris Herrmann, currently riding a 5-game streak over which he is hitting .375 (9-for-24) with 2 doubles, 5 runs scored and 6 RBI, will look to be the first Red Wings to reach a 6-game hitting streak.

-Doug Bernier (0-for-1; 3 BB) and Evan Bigley (0-for-4) each had their 5-game hitting streaks snapped last night.

BENSON HEATING UP: Over the last 3 games, Red Wings OF Joe Benson is 5-for-13 with 6 runs scored and 4 extra-base hits (HR, 2 triples & a double)... Benson had just one extra-base hit (2B) in his first 17 games of the season. The 2 triples tie him for the league-lead with 6 other players.

SLOW STARTS: After an 8-14 start, the Red Wings will need to win 2 of their next 4 games to finish the month of April with 10 victories. After winning 10-plus games in April for 7 straight years (2002-08), Rochester hasn't reached the 10-win mark in the last four seasons going a combined 34-51 in the first month of the season. Since 1980, the most April wins for the Wings was 17 in 1997 -- they started that season 0-3 and ended as Governors' Cup champions.
