June 18, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD

GAME #70 - HOME GAME #31 - 7:05 P.M.

DURHAM BULLS (30-41) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (32-37)

RHP JIM PADUCH (2-5, 5.23) vs. RHP STEVE HIRSCHFELD (0-0, 0.00)

DON'T GET BULLIED: The Rochester Red Wings tonight open an 8-game homestand with the first of 4 vs. Durham (Rays). Following Durham's 2nd regular-season visit to Rochester (the Bulls played the Empire State Yankees May 11-4), the Red Wings will welcome Charlotte (White Sox) to town for a 4-game series beginning Friday. Then it's back on the road for a quick 4-game trip to Lehigh Valley (Phillies) June 26-29.

a The Red Wings are 32 games into a 40-game stretch of playing teams outside the International League North Division. They are 18-14 in the stretch thus far. The Wings opened the season with 37 consecutive games against North foes, going 14-23 in those contests.

ROSTER MOVE: Right-handed pitcher Steve Hirschfeld today was promoted from Double-A New Britain to start against Durham. He replaces righthander Liam Hendriks, who on Saturday was recalled to the Minnesota Twins. Hirschfeld is enjoying his 2nd stint with Rochester in 2012. He started June 6 vs. Norfolk (Orioles), tossing 5.0 scoreless innings but not figuring in the decision in the Wings' 4-1 win.

a Eight players, including 5 pitchers, have been promoted from New Britain this season.

ROADTRIP RECAP: The Red Wings tonight return home from a 4-4 roadtrip, losing 3 of 4 at Indianapolis (Pirates) before winning 3 of 4 at Louisville (Reds). By going 4-4, it marked Rochester's first non-losing roadtrip since July 22-29, 2011, when they went 4-4 at Indianapolis (1-3) and Louisville (3-1). Rochester hasn't had a winning roadtrip since April 17-21, 2011, when they went 3-2 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barres (1-0) and Buffalo (2-2). That roadtrip was shortened to 5 games from 6 after the series opener at Scranton was rained out.

a The Red Wings went 6-2 against Louisville in 2012 for their best record in a season series against a team outside of the IL North Division since 2006, when they went 6-2 against Columbus, Durham, Norfolk, and Richmond.

CELLAR DWELLERS NO MORE?: The Red Wings enter tonight tied for 5th place in the IL North Division with Syracuse (Nationals). With a Red Wings' win vs. Durham and a Syracuse loss vs. Pawtucket tonight, the Wings would be out of last place for the first time since entering play on May 12. The Red Wings that day were in sole possession of 5th place with a 14-20 record, a half game ahead of Syracuse (14-21). The Chiefs would go on to defeat the Wings that night 11-0 at Frontier Field to re-take 5th place.

BETTER BASEBALL: The Red Wings are 18-14 in their last 32 games beginning May 15 and are 23-21 beginning May 3. Rochester is tied for the 5th-best record in the IL beginning May 15:

Rank Team Record Winning %

1. Charlotte 21-10 .677

2. Empire State 22-12 .647

3. Pawtucket 20-11 .645

4. Lehigh Valley 17-13 .567

T5. Rochester 18-14 .563

Indianapolis 18-14 .563

a Rochester has won 3 of its 4 series in June, winning 3 of 4 vs. Columbus and Norfolk, losing 3 of 4 at Indianapolis, and taking 3 of 4 at Louisville. Thus, Rochester is 10-6 in June. Only Charlotte, Empire State, and Pawtucket have more wins in the month with 11. Norfolk also has 10 wins.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS: The Red Wings tonight return to Frontier Field, where they are 22-16. That record includes an 18-12 mark as the home team. The Wings, meanwhile, are just 10-21 in true road games.

a Rochester went 6-2 on its most recent homestand, taking 3 of 4 from both Columbus (Indians) and Norfolk.

a Rochester has a 2.57 ERA (92 ER/322.0 IP) at Frontier Field and a 5.20 ERA (150 ER/259.2 IP) away from Rochester.

HOMER HAPPY: The Red Wings have homered in a season-high 4 straight games. Matt Carson homered twice and Clete Thomas hit his 5th long ball yesterday at Louisville to extend the streak. The Wings last homered in at least 5 straight games August 7-11, 2011, when they did it 5 games in a row.

a The Red Wings have already homered 12 times in 16 games in June after hitting 15 homers in 30 games in May.

a The Red Wings have hit 37 home runs overall, tied with Indianapolis for the lowest total in the league. Toledo's Brad Eldred has 24 home runs himself to lead the IL.

a Thomas is tied with Michael Hollimon for the club lead.

a Carson and Thomas hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning yesterday at Louisville, the Red Wings' first set since the first game of a July 5, 2011 doubleheader vs. Pawtucket. Brandon Roberts and Trevor Plouffe turned the trick that day.

TEAR WALDROP: Kyle Waldrop yesterday became the 6th different Red Wing to record a save. The Twins' first-round pick in 2004 has recorded at least one save for Rochester 3 years in a row. Anthony Slama, who a team-leading 9 saves, has logged at least one save in 4 consecutive seasons with the Red Wings. Slama is currently on the 7-Day Disabled List with a right leg contusion.

a Eight different Red Wings' pitchers registered a save in 2011, including a team-high 9 by Jim Hoey.
