ROBERTSON, DURHAM LEAD CAPS TO EMPHATIC WIN

May 11, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1) - West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - Montreal Robertson threw seven strong innings and the middle of the West Michigan Whitecaps' batting lineup exploded for a 9-4 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Saturday night at Coveleski Stadium.

West Michigan (15-17) won the opener of the three-game series over South Bend (20-11), putting themselves in position to earn their first series victory on the road with a win on either Sunday or Monday.

The middle of the lineup did the bulk of the damage, led by a 4-for-4 night from Lance Durham that included a home run, two doubles, four runs scored and four RBI. Jeff Holm was 2-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored and Danry Vasquez went 3-for-5.

Meanwhile, Robertson (2-3) bounced back from a series of rough outings to fire off seven strong frames on Saturday night. He allowed just one earned run - two total runs - while scattering eight hits to earn the win. After walking 17 batters over his previous four starts, Robertson issued just one free pass on Saturday and promptly erased it with a groundball double play. His seven innings pitched tied a career high and marked the longest outing by a Whitecaps' starter this season.

The 22-year-old right-hander was victimized for an unearned run in the bottom of the first, an inning in which the 'Caps were charged with two infield throwing errors while falling behind 1-0. The rest of the game, however, was dominated by the visitors.

Holm quickly tied the score with a solo homer to lead off the second inning. Later in the frame, Jared Reaves beat out a two-out infield single as Durham scored from third for a 2-1 lead.

Holm started another rally in the third by drawing a two-out walk. Durham brought him home with a double off the wall in right-center and scored on a base hit by Vasquez to stretch the lead to 4-1.

It was 4-2 when Durham, a 25-year-old from Cincinnati, unloaded for a long two-run homer in the top of the fifth. Austin Schotts singled, stole a base and came around to score in the sixth. Durham drilled another double in the seventh and scored his fourth run of the night when another two-out single by Reaves pushed the lead to 8-2.

After Robertson's departure, South Bend rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth to make things interesting. But Josh Turley came out of the bullpen to limit the damage, going on to retire all four of the batters that he faced for his first save of the year.

Durham capped his big night in the ninth, following a leadoff double by Holm with a run-scoring single to cement the 9-4 final.

Blake Perry (0-2) took the loss for South Bend after being roughed up for five runs on five hits and four walks over four innings.

In other news, the Whitecaps' suspended game from Friday night in Bowling Green has been scheduled to be completed on Sunday, May 19, at Fifth Third Ballpark.
