Roanoke Dazzles Flight

Huntsville, Ala. (Jan. 17) –The Roanoke Dazzle sank 9-of-10 free throws in the 48 seconds of play to hold off the Huntsville Flight 110-100 in tonight’s National Basketball Development League play. The Flight drops to 11-8 while the Dazzle increases to 10-7.

"Roanoke showed us they could beat us last night. They play a very physical and aggressive game," said Flight head coach Ralph Lewis. "Tonight they beat us. They beat us in the paint. They beat us on the boards. They beat us at the final score."

Roanoke outscored Huntsville over the opening seven minutes of the fourth quarter to increase its lead to 20 points (97-77) by the 3:09 mark. Huntsville guard Rick Apodaca scored eight points and nabbed a steal in the Flight’s 16-4 run in a minute-and-a-half to pull within eight with 48 seconds left. The Flight would get no closer.

Trailing by 15 at the half (38-53), the Flight used 24-10 run over seven minutes to pull within one. The Dazzle responded with seven unanswered points before Huntsville guard Mateen Cleaves-onnected on a last second rebound as the period ended.

Roanoke opened the game shooting 52 percent from the field. The Dazzle pulled out to as much as a 19 point lead before ending the period 34-16.

The Dazzle scored first and maintained the lead for the entire game.

Roanoke’s Terrence Shannon came off the bench to pace five players in double figures with 22 points. He was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Curtis Staples scored 18 points, 14 in the first half. Mikki Moore tossed in 17 points, sinking 9-for-10 from the line.

Huntsville’s Rod Grizzard led the team with 27 points. Rick Apodaca tied his season high of 21 points.

The Flight travels to Charleston, SC on Wednesday for the first game in a four-day, three game road trip. The Dazzle travels to Asheville, NC for a matchup with the Altitude on Monday.
