Camden Riversharks News Release

The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 4-2 tonight, in front of a sell-out crowd at Campbell's Field . Somerset's Josh Miller (6-3) picked up his sixth win of the season, as he allowed just two runs and seven hits in seven innings of work, while fanning seven batters. The loss was charged to Camden's Julio Guerrero (1-2) who allowed the go-ahead run in the 8th inning. Travis Minix sealed the win with a scoreless ninth, notching his 12th save of the season. With the win, the Riversharks fall 23-24, while Somerset's improves to 31-16.

Things got off to a quick start for Camden, when center fielder Wayne Lydon hit a seeing-eye single to right field. Lydon quickly advanced to 2nd courtesy of a throwing error by Somerset starter Josh Miller, on a bunt by right fielder Chris Walker. Lydon would eventually come around to score when Jon Knott ripped a pitch to left field, giving the Sharks an early 1-0 advantage.

A few errors in the top of the third inning allowed the Patriots to draw even, when Riversharks' shortstop Bryant Nelson threw a ball over the head of 1st baseman Brian Burgamy, allowing Ayala to advance to 2nd. Ayala would eventually scored, when Riversharks' Pitcher Tom Davey had a ball sneak under his glove, on a ball hit by right fielder Matt Rodriguez.

The Riversharks regained their lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, when left fielder Jon Knott unloaded a missile over the left field wall, for a 2-1 lead. But, the Patriots again answered back in the top of the 5th inning, after Somerset's Jeff Nettles and Jason Belcher both hit singles. The next batter was Joe Burke, whose hit to 2nd base was bobbled by Spivey, loading the bases for left fielder Elliot Ayala. Ayala was walked by Davey, giving Nettles the free pass to home, knotting the score at 2-2.

It wasn't until the 8th inning, when Somerset broke the tie. A pair of singles by Nettles and Matt Hagen paved the way for Jason Belcher to rope a ball into left field, sending Nettles home for the 3-2 lead.

The Patriots' added an insurance run off the bat of Josh Pressley, when he singled to center, scoring Mike Rodriguez for the 4-2 advantage. With the lead at two, Somerset put the game on the arm of Closer Travis Minix, who retired all three batters in order, for his 12th save of the season.

The Riversharks and Patriots will play game two of their three game series tomorrow night at 5:35pm. The Riversharks will send Lefty Ryan DiPietro (0-1, 3.66 ERA) to the hill, and he will be opposed by right handed pitcher Jim Magrane (6-0, 2.45 ERA) from Somerset. Limited seating is still available for tomorrow's game. For more information, or to purchase tickets visit www.riversharks.com.
