Peoria Rivermen News Release

FINISHING THE SEASON STRONG

The Rivermen come into tonight's playoff opener after a pair of prolific games from forwards Mike Gurtler and Connor Toomey to finish the regular season. In the regular schedule's final two games against Columbus, Gurtler posted his second career hat trick as part of a five-point performance Friday night and followed that with a goal and two assists in Saturday's regular season finale. Toomey, meanwhile, notched two goals and two assists Friday night before adding a goal and an assist Saturday to move the rookie center into a three-way tie with Chris Wilson and Adam Stuart for the team lead in points, and give him the most points by an SPHL rookie this season, despite playing in only 48 games between Peoria and Macon.

THE MEN BEHIND THE MASKS

The Rivermen enter this year's SPHL playoffs with two of the top three goaltenders in the league this season in terms of Goals-Against Average. Rivermen goaltender Kyle Rank, the two-time SPHL Goaltender of the year, finished the season with a league-best 2.15 GAA, his 21 wins leave him one behind the league-leader, and his .928 save percentage ties him for second best in the SPHL among goaltenders with at least 1110 minutes played this year. Jacobson, meanwhile, is 14-4-0 since joining the Rivermen, including three shutouts and three denied regulation penalty shots. Jacobson's overall 2.38 GAA places him third among active qualifiers, and his .921 save percentage ties him for fourth in the league.

THE WHOLE SHOOTING MATCH

The Rivermen enter tonight's game after a regular season in which they finished second in the league with 33.98 shots on goal per game and sixth at 30.30 shots on goal allowed per game. The Rivermen out-shot their opponents 663-524 in the first period of games this season, and out-scored their foes 72-31 in the first 20 minutes, each the widest such margin for any team in any period this season. When out-shooting opponents this year, Peoria was 26-6-2, and when leading after 20 minutes the Rivermen were 27-5-1.

WHAT'S AHEAD

After tonight's game the Rivermen will travel back to Peoria to play game 2 of the best-of-3 series against the Mayhem at Owens Center Friday night. If necessary, the decisive game 3 of the series will be at Owens Center on Saturday night.
