Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen battled back from down two goals but ultimately fell short in a 5-4 loss to the Rockford IceHogs at the BMO Harris Bank Center on Wednesday night. Mark Cundari registered three assists and Cody Beach had two but Jeremy Morin scored two power-play goals for Rockford to end Peoria's three-game winning streak.
The two teams combined for five goals in a back-and-forth first period that ended with the Rivermen leading 3-2. Rockford scored just 56 seconds into grab the early lead. Adam Clendening's shot rolled over the glove of Jake Allen and into the net for his third of the year. The lead grew to 2-0 as Brandon Saad scored an unassisted shorthanded breakaway goal at the 12:00 mark.
The last 6:43 of the first frame saw the Rivermen score three goals and take the lead. Phil McRae scored his fourth goal of the year, and fourth in his last four games, only seconds after a Peoria power play had expired to cut Rockford's lead in half. With 4:56 to go in the period Ian Cole tallied his second goal of the year to tie the game. Cole fired a shot from the blueline that beat Carter Hutton low to the blocker side.
With 45 second remaining in the first period Jaden Schwartz scored his fourth goal of the year to give the Rivermen their first lead of the evening. With the puck behind the net, Cody Beach made a behind the back pass to Schwartz who was able to beat Hutton from just outside the crease.
Rockford backup Alec Richards relieved Hutton at the start of the second period after Hutton allowed three goals on nine shots. Richards finished with one goal against and 15 saves.
The IceHogs took the lead with two goals scored 25 seconds apart late in the second period. Martin St. Pierre deflected one home at 17:32 from Hayes and Smith to tie the contest. Morin scored his sixth of the season on the power play to give Rockford back the lead. Clendening and Nick Leddy earned the assists.
At 7:20 of the third period, Morin added his second power-play goal of the night to make the score 5-3.
Sergey Andronov jammed in a rebound with 14.3 seconds left in the third but the Rivermen couldn't tie the game before time ran out.
The Rivermen were outshot 35-25 and were 0-for-5 on the power play.
