RiverKings Shot Down by Marksmen

January 9, 2018 - Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) - Mississippi RiverKings

News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - RiverKings get on the board first, but Fayetteville nets three unanswered to knock off Mississippi 3-1 in the first meeting of the two teams this season.

In a game which featured so many former players on either side of the ice, the RiverKings and Devin Mantha would break the ice in the first period. While on the penalty kill a simple RiverKings' dump in hit the right-wing boards and fooled Fayetteville netminder Peter Di Salvo who attempted to play the puck. Devin Mantha was the first one to get to the puck with Di Salvo caught out of his net but still in position to make a save. Mantha made sure that didn't happen and found the back of the net to give the RiverKings the lead 1-0.

It wouldn't take long for the Marksmen to return fire when the SPHL's leading scorer got on the board. Jake Hauswirth netted his 13th goal of the season and his 34th overall point beating RiverKings goalie Tyler Green and the RiverKings penalty killing unit, tying things up at 1-1.

Out of the first intermission, it was the middle period that gave the black and gold fits once again. A second power-play goal of the night for the Marksmen gave them their first lead. Kyle McNeil, scoring on back-to-back nights, was able to pound home a rebound only feet in front of Tyler Green and Fayetteville took the lead, 2-1. In the only even-strength goal of the night, it was former RiverKing John Schaivo who handed it to his old team, poking a backhand through the wickets of Tyler Green and getting the five-hole goal taking the Marksmen up 3-1.

The RiverKings couldn't get any more goals past netminder Pete Di Salvo though they had their opportunities and had plenty of heartbreak to go with it. The RiverKings would find the post three times on the night, including a demoralizing Bryan Arneson breakaway that clanked off the iron.

It wasn't the RiverKings night, but they have the opportunity to rebound with their next game when the Knoxville Ice Bears return to Southaven for the second time this season on Friday, January 12. It's Canada Night at Planters Bank Ice at Landers Center with specialty ticket packages available, one of which includes a RiverThing bobble belly figurine.
