Mississippi RiverKings News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - A three-goal second period gave the Mississippi RiverKings (21-9-6) a 3-2 victory, their sixth in a row, over the Pensacola Ice Flyers (20-12-2) on Friday night in Pensacola.
The Ice Flyers struck first late in the first period. Adam Pawlick took a pass through the crease from Corey Banfield and buried it past RiverKings' netminder Garrett Seehan and Pensacola had a 1-0 lead with 3:03 left in the first.
In the second, the RiverKings exploded for a trio of goals. Just 1:22 into the middle frame, Todd Hosmer's shot beat Ice Flyer goaltender John McLean from the left wing circle to tie the game at one. The RiverKings added to their lead just moments later. With the Ice Flyers serving a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty, Donald Olivieri took a pass from the corner and buried it past McLean to put the RiverKings up 2-1. Four minutes later, Max Cook collected his first goal as a RiverKing on a deflection off an Olivieri shot from the point to give the RiverKings a two-goal lead.
In the third, the Ice Flyers battled back. Mike Krieg ripped a shot from the point that beat Sheehan high over the glove to bring the Ice Flyers within one early in the third. With the net pulled late in the game, the RiverKings held off the late rush to give them a 3-2 victory and extended their winning streak to six games.
Garrett Sheehan (7-5-4) stopped 30 of 32 shots against. John McLean (9-6-1) took the loss after stopping 29 of 32 shots.
The RiverKings tallied two power play goals on seven opportunities. Pensacola scored a pair of goals on seven chances with the man-advantage.
The RiverKings are back on home ice Friday and Saturday February 26 and 27 against the Macon Mayhem. For ticket information, call 662-342-1755 or visit RiverKings.com.
