Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston's bats exploded for a pair of five-run innings highlighted by Melky Mesa's two home runs as the RiverDogs whacked the GreenJackets for a 13-2 triumph in South Atlantic League action Wednesday evening in front of 1,310 fans at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.

With the triumph, the RiverDogs improve to 8-5 while the GreenJackets fall to 2-11.

The RiverDogs erupted for five runs to take an imposing 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Ray Kruml and Brian Baisley sandwiched walks between a David Adams fly out. With runners on first and second, Abraham Almonte singled to right field that plated Kruml for Charleston's first run while Baisley scampered into third. Taylor Grote followed with a single up the middle that scored Baisley as Almonte advanced to second. Melky Mesa hammered his third home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left field fence, to cap Charleston's five-run inning

Augusta responded in the bottom of the fourth when Craig Ziegler knocked a two-out double to right only to sprint around the bases after Josh Mazzola singled to left which cut into Charleston's advantage, 5-1.

Charleston reclaimed its five-run lead, 6-1, in the top of the fifth inning when Carmen Angelini smacked a leadoff single. After a groundout and wild pitch advanced Angelini to third, Baisley cracked a double to left that allowed Angelini to score.

The RiverDogs continued their offensive explosion in the sixth inning as they extended their lead to 8-1. Mesa used his speed to leg out an infield single only to have Mitch Abeita and Garrison Lassiter draw walks to load the bases. Angelini laced a single to left that plated Mesa and kept the bases loaded for Kruml, who lifted a sacrifice fly that drove in Abeita.

The GreenJackets slashed into Charleston's lead 8-2 in their half of the sixth frame. Former Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Dom Duggan flashed his speed to beat out a triple to lead off the inning only to score after Ehire Adrianza singled up the middle for Augusta's final run.

Charleston's bats unleashed a second five-run inning in the eighth to take a dominating 13-2 advantage as Mesa tattooed his second home run of the game, a solo blast over the left field wall, to lead off the inning. Abeita, Adams, and Lastiter each walked to load the bases for Baisley, who destroyed a three-run double to left that cleared the bases. Pinch hitter Dan Brewer added a single up the middle that plated Baisley for the inning's fifth run.

RiverDogs starter Manny Banuelos (1-1) held the Augusta GreenJackets in check over 5.1 innings pitched where he allowed only two earned runs on four hits and two walks in addition to four strike outs.

Charleston's relief pitchers continued their dominance as Hector Noesi and Brad Rulon combined to blank the GreenJackets over the final 3.2 innings as they only issued only one hit and struck out five.

Augusta's Kyle Nicholson (0-3) struggled during his time on the mound as he was charged with eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks while only striking out two.

The RiverDogs will look to continue their offensive attack against the Augusta GreenJackets Thursday night. Charleston turns to former Notre Dame Standout David Phelps (2-0, 0.77 ERA) while Augusta is scheduled to send former University of Portland southpaw Ari Ronick (0-0, 5.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.

After the longest road trip of the season, a nine-game three-city trip through Georgia, the RiverDogs return to the friendly confines of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Saturday, April 25 for a three-game set versus the Savannah Sand Gnats, an affiliate of the New York Mets.
