CHARLESTON, SC - Corban Joseph clouted four hits and drove in four RBI as the Charleston RiverDogs walloped the Asheville Tourists, 14-4, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 4,270 fans at Asheville's McCormick Field.
The RiverDogs set a season-high with seven doubles and tied season-highs with 14 runs scored and eight extra-base hits.
With the victory, the RiverDogs take the series opener and improves on their second half record to 6-4 (45-35 overall) while the Tourist fall to 5-4 in the second half (31-47 overall).
The RiverDogs seized an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first when Charleston sent 10 men to the plate and ratcheted six hits. Melky Mesa and Garrision Lassiter each lined RBI doubles while Chase Weems smacked a RBI single to lead the offensive charge.
Charleston added to its advantage in the second when Corban Joseph singled to center and scored on Abraham Almonte's double to make the score 7-0
The RiverDogs took an 8-0 lead in the fourth when Jose Pirela laced a leadoff double and trotted home on Joseph's RBI triple.
Spanning four games, the RiverDogs pitching staff amassed a scoreless streak of 23.1 innings that ended in the fourth when Jordan Pacheco cracked a double and scored on David Christensen's single up the middle. Following a fielding error that allowed James Cesario to reach and advanced Christensen to second, Kiel Roling cleared the bases with a two-run doubled to left as Asheville cut into Charleston's advantage, 8-3.
Charleston took a ten-run lead, 13-3, in the fifth when the RiverDogs sent nine batters to the plate and ratcheted three hits. Pirela and Joseph each amassed RBI doubles to pace the offense.
The RiverDogs attained a 14-3 advantage in the seventh when Weems drew a leadoff walk and reached third following a walk and fielder's choice. Joseph hammered Weems home with a RBI double.
Asheville's Ryan Peisel tattooed his third home run of the season over the center field fence for a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 14-4.
Charleston starter Manny Banuelos (7-3) earned the win after he completed six full stanzas and was charged three runs - one earned - on five hits and five strikeouts. RiverDogs relievers Dan Kapala and Edwin Walker pitched the final three frames and combined to allow one earned run on three hits and two strikeouts to lockdown the triumph.
Asheville starter Robinson Fabian (2-6) suffered the defeat after he threw 2.0 innings and allowed seven runs - five earned - on nine hits.
Charleston's bats pounded 17 hits led by Joseph's four base knocks while Beau Seabury tallied two of the Asheville's seven hits.
Right-hander Brett Marshall (3-5, 5.45 ERA) will toe the rubber for the RiverDogs while Asheville counters with righty Dan Houston (3-6, 4.15 ERA) in Game 2 of the four-game set with first pitch set for Sunday at 7:05 p.m.
