Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - First baseman Chris Gittens smashed two home runs going 3-for-4 and driving in five as the Charleston RiverDogs flew past the Greenville Drive, 8-2, to take the series over their in-state rivals in front of 3,053 on Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
The Texas slugger cranked a three-run blast in the third to extend Charleston's lead to 4-0 before adding a solo bomb off the batter's eye in straight center that made it 5-0 in the seventh to bring his season total to 21 on the season. Gittens remains second in home runs in the South Atlantic League behind Jose Pujols of Lakewood who hit his 24th of the year the same night and four shy of the Charleston franchise record held by three different players (Delmon Young, 2004; Justin Schuda, 2001; and Mark Pirruccello, 1983). It was the fourth multi-home run game of the season for the Yankees' former 12th round pick in 2014.
With the win, the RiverDogs (69-57, 27-30) take the four-game series victory over the Drive (66-60, 29-28) and sit seven games back of the first-place Rome Braves now atop the division and in line to face Charleston in the first round of the SAL playoffs.
The RiverDogs' dominant pitching staff took a back seat for the second straight night with Nick Green (2-0, 0.75) spinning six shutout innings with four strikeouts in his second start in a RiverDogs uniform to pick up the win. Anyelo Gomez took it the next two frames, striking out six while giving up a pair of hits in two innings of work.
The RiverDogs got on the board in the first when Alex Palma stroked a single to left center that scored Ricardo Ferreira who doubled to lead off the inning.
Charleston pushed their lead out to 8-0 in the eighth when the Greenville bullpen issued five walks in the inning including three with the bases loaded. Gittens, Palma, and Jhalan Jackson all collected RBIs with three bases loaded walks in a row.
The Drive broke up the shutout in the top of the ninth, drawing two straight one out walks. Charleston righty Greg Weissert struck out Mitchell Gunsolus for his second punch out of the inning before Jeremy Rivera doubled a pair home on a fly ball deep to center field to make it 9-2.

The RiverDogs welcomed fans and their pups into the park on the last Monday Dog Day of the season at The Joe with the Charleston faithful enjoying dollar beers and dollar hot dogs presented by Miller Lite.
