RiverDogs Pitching on Display in SAL All-Star Game

LEXINGTON, KY - Three RiverDogs pitchers saw action as the Southern Division All-Stars led by Charleston manager Luis Dorante fell to the Northern side, 2-1, at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in the 57th Annual South Atlantic League All- Star game on Tuesday night. Two other Charleston hurlers, Daris Vargas and Nestor Cortes, made the trip as all-star representatives as RiverDogs pitching coach Justin Pope stood with Dorante from the bench.

RiverDogs righty Cody Carroll logged a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts to highlight Charleston's top pitching staff this season. The Mount Juliet, TN native did not allow a hit while issuing a hit by pitch as he worked the sixth inning to keep the score at a 2-0 advantage for the North.

Christian Morris pitched the fifth inning, allowing a run on three hits with a strikeout, while Charleston closer Andrew Schwaab came in to record the final two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Schwaab gave up no runs on one hit while striking out a batter.

Greenville catcher Austin Rei homered to put the South on the board in the bottom of the eighth and cut the deficit to 2-1.

It was the first All-Star accolades for Carroll, Morris, and Schwaab who were key pieces of a RiverDogs pitching staff that finished with an astounding 2.85 ERA that leads the South Atlantic League at the halfway mark and is the only sub-3.00 ERA in the league. The RiverDogs staff struck out a league high 648 batters for an average of 9.6 Ks per nine innings. Charleston finished the first half with a 42-27 record en route a Southern Division first half title and their first playoff berth in over 11 seasons secured.

Upcoming

Charleston will open the second half with a four-game series on the road against the Rome Braves from June 23-26. The RiverDogs will send RHP Luis Cedeno (4-2, 3.15) in game one on Thursday with the Braves starter to be announced.
