RiverDogs Clinch Series, Win 4-3 over Columbia

CHARLESTON, SC -Jhalan Jackson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an RBI single to help push the Charleston RiverDogs over the Columbia Fireflies, 4-3, Sunday evening in front of 5,114 strong at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

It was a three-run fifth inning that gave the Charleston RiverDogs (27-15) the series-clinching win, as the RiverDogs collected three back-to-back-to-back singles and a pair of walks to capture their 27th win of the season, 4-3 over the Columbia Fireflies (21-22).

The Fireflies cut the lead by a run in the eighth with an RBI single from Columbia shortstop Milton Ramos, making it 4-3.

Andrew Schwaab came out of the bullpen for the ninth inning and recorded two strikeouts to give him his eighth save of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Charleston took a 4-2 lead over Columbia with a series of RBI singles. Newcomer Nathan Mikolas got the rally going with a leadoff walk, along with Kyle Holder.  Three consecutive singles were hit, which began when Chris Gittens stepped up and tied the game with an RBI base hit to right, scoring Mikolas. Connor Spencer drove his RBI single to center that plated Holder, and Jhalan Jackson roped a base hit to left scoring Gittens.

In the bottom of the second inning, Jhalan Jackson sent Chase Ingram's (3-3) 2-2 fastball deep towards left-center as he put the RiverDogs up on the Columbia Fireflies 1-0 with the solo shot.

Columbia answered right back in the top of the third with two runs off of Charleston's Daris Vargas (4-0). Pat Mazeika hit a two RBI single to center to take the lead, 2-1.

Charleston shortstop Kyle Holder extended his hitting streak to a team-high 11 games with an infield single that he beat out in the first inning.

Charleston still remains atop the South Atlantic League Southern Division with a 5.5 game lead over the Asheville Tourists.

Ballpark Fun

The Charleston RiverDogs held their annual "Bark for your Brew" event before the game where patrons were able to bring in their furry friends and sample craft beer. Charleston celebrated another Holy City Sunday as the RiverDogs recognized the local Jewish community, along with a pregame dog parade. Kids were able to play catch on the field and run the bases after the game presented by CPI Security.

The RiverDogs are back in action on Monday night for the first contest against the West Virginia Power in a three-game series as RHP Luis Cedeno (0-1, 7.71) will toe the rubber for Charleston, facing RHP J.T. Brubaker (2-4, 3.98) of the Power.

We put the "Dog" in RiverDogs as part of a Dog Day in conjunction with Camp Bow Wow and Z93 Jamz. Bring your pup to the park to cheer on the RiverDogs as you enjoy $1 beers and $1 hot dogs presented by Miller Lite and Paws Olympics. There will be several contests for dogs to compete in such as dog bowl beer pong, long distance treat catching, and more. "Dogs with a Cause" returns on Monday nights in association with Blackbaud, Inc. The RiverDogs and Blackbaud, the local software and services leader for the global philanthropic community, will share the spotlight with a different local nonprofit each Monday. On this night, we focus on the Junior League. Youth baseball night celebrates youth baseball in the Lowcountry where all players and coaches come out for free, as each team will be recognized in a pregame parade on the field
