Charleston RiverDogs News Release

ROME, GA - It took the Charleston RiverDogs a month before they lost two games in a row in the first half of the season, and they spent all but one day in first place as they grabbed the first half crown in the Southern Division. On Friday night, the RiverDogs dropped their second in a row to the Braves to begin the second half as they were edged out, 3-2, at State Mutual Stadium.

Charleston (42-29) took the early lead in the third as Chris Gittens continued his tear in the month of June, ripping a two run double off the wall in right center to make it 2-0 RiverDogs. Charleston catcher Eduardo Navas and shortstop Hoy Jun Park each reached to lead off the inning on a single and a walk, respectively.

Rome (29-42) trimmed the deficit to one in the bottom half. With one out Yefrey Ramirez (4-2) issued a rare walk to Alejandro Salazar, just his fourth issued in the last 37.2 innings for the RiverDogs starter. After Ray-Patrick Didder flew out to right, second baseman Luke Dykstra singled up the middle to make it 2-1.

The Braves would get to Ramirez once again in the sixth. Didder singled to lead off the frame before Austin Riley hammered a 394 foot shot to left field, his fifth of the season and second in as many days, to give Rome a 3-2 lead.

Charleston had a chance to tie the ballgame up with runners on first and third and one out in the seventh, but failed to come through. In the eighth, Rome reliever Matt Custred issued two walks, one to Jhalan Jackson who was caught stealing and another to Jeff Hendrix who would swipe second and advance to third on error, but be left stranded.

Ramirez took the loss for Charleston, allowing three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Jose Mesa worked a scoreless eighth with a strikeout.
