Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA - All of the runs came in one inning for the Sacramento River Cats (19-28) Wednesday afternoon against the Colorado Sky Sox (19-23), but that was okay as Clayton Blackburn put together six shutout innings in a 6-0 River Cats win.

Sacramento sent 10 men to the plate against the Sky Sox and starter Jorge Lopez in the bottom of the second inning, scoring six times on four hits, three walks, and a Colorado Springs error. Catcher Andrew Susac opened the inning by reaching on an error and was followed by a double by outfielder Mac Williamson to put two on with no outs.

After Ryan Lollis grounded out, scoring Susac, Sacramento strung together six straight baserunners, taking advantage of three singles and three walks. The biggest hit of the inning came off the bat of Gorkys Hernandez, who smoked a two-run single up the middle, scoring both Grant Green and Hak-Ju Lee. Overall, Hernandez was 1-for-3 with a two RBI, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base, his ninth of the season.

The six runs in the inning were the most by Sacramento in a single inning since they scored nine in the third inning of their May 5 win against the Albuquerque Isotopes. The team only managed three other hits on the afternoon, all in the fifth inning, but their big second-inning outburst was more than enough to support a shutout performance by the River Cats pitchers.

Making his first start since May 8, Blackburn allowed a leadoff single to Nate Orf before retiring the next 12 he faced. The right-hander threw six shutout innings, giving up just two base hits and one walk while striking out five. It was his first scoreless start of the season and Blackburn lowered his ERA from 5.51 to 4.46 while improving to 2-3.

Blackburn was followed by San Francisco Giants reliever Sergio Romo, who made his second rehab appearance with Sacramento this afternoon. Romo threw a crisp 1-2-3 inning, striking out one and throwing nine of his 16 pitches for strikes. In two innings with Sacramento, Romo has allowed one run and struck out four.

Alex Torres and Jake Dunning put together two more scoreless innings as the River Cats shut out the Sky Sox on four total hits. It was just the second time the River Cats have shut out their opponent this season as they improve to 2-3 in shutout games.

The series comes to a close tomorrow night as Chris Heston (0-4, 4.45) goes for his first win of the season. He'll face Colorado Springs' Hiram Burgos (2-3, 4.15). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com. The game will air again on ESPN 1320 following the conclusion of the NBA playoffs.
