River Cats Loss Adds to Bleak Sacramento Weather

May 20, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release

NASHVILLE, TN - Sacramento's weather was as gloomy as the River Cats (16-26) loss to the Nashville Sounds (22-19) Friday evening. The 2-1 defeat is the fourth of the road trip as the team now looks to split their second series before returning home.

Strikeouts were back to plague the Sacramento offense as the team lost ten batters swinging and one looking. The bats were cold as the team collected just five hits on the night. The hits came from batters two through six in the lineup as the middle of the order was able to produce the only offensive fight the team had to give.

The quiet offense is uncharacteristic of the River Cats, who are hitting .298 on the road this season. They have collected 143 runs on 269 hits while traveling in comparison to just 55 runs on 125 hits while at Raley Field.

Starter Chris Heston matched a season high, going 6 2/3 innings on the mound. He allowed two runs on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Heston had not allowed a home run in his six appearances before tonight's contest. Nashville's first-baseman Rangel Ravelo finally got to Heston, who had gone nearly 27 innings without allowing a home run.

Nashville was on the board first when Heston walked Josh Rodriguez with the bases loaded in the second inning. They would score again in the fourth off of Ravelo's solo homer. However, the River Cats' rebuttal in the sixth was not enough to tie up the score. Ryan Lollis singled at the top of the inning and was chased home by an RBI double from Mac Williamson to give the River Cats their lone run of the game.

Lollis's single through the hole at second base was his first hit of the road trip. He was 0-for-19 at the plate with four walks and two strikeouts and saw his average fall from .308 to .273 over his five-game hitless skid. He is now hitting .283 on the road.

For the third game of the series, it will be Sacramento's lefty Ty Blach (5-3, 3.67) looking for his PCL-best sixth win. He will face off against Nashville's right-hander Chris Smith (2-5, 4.40). First pitch is set for 4:35 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and will air on ESPN 1320 at 8:30 p.m.
