Riquna Williams Suffers Ruptured Left Achilles Tendon

March 30, 2016 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) - Los Angeles Sparks News Release

LOS ANGELES -Los Angeles Sparks guard Riquna Williams will miss the 2016 WNBA season due to a ruptured left Achilles tendon, executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler announced today.

The injury, which will require surgery, was suffered while playing with Al Nasr Sports Club in the Adu Dhabi Inter-University Sports League. No timetable has been set for her return.

"Obviously this is a devastating blow to Riquna and the Sparks" said Toler. "While our commitment to winning hasn't changed, our immediate concern is for Riquna's health and supporting her through her recovery."

The Sparks acquired Williams and the sixth pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft from the Dallas Wings in exchange for guard Erin Phillips, LA's fifth pick in the 2016 Draft and its 2017 first round selection. Williams owns career averages of 13.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 100 games played with the Tulsa Shock (now the Dallas Stars). The four-year veteran had her best season to date last year, averaging career-highs in rebounds (3.4 rpg), assists (2.6 apg) and minutes (28.0 mpg) and tying her career-high in points, ranking sixth among league scoring leaders with 15.6 ppg in 29 games (20 starts). She was named an injury replacement player for WNBA All-Star 2015 as a reserve on the Western Conference roster.

The Sparks historic 20th season, presented by EquiTrust, will tip-off May 15, 2016. For Sparks season and group tickets, in all lower-bowl sections of STAPLES Center, call 844-GO-SPARKS or visit LASparks.com. The Los Angeles Sparks can be found on all social media outlets at @la_Sparks.
