Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS - Zach Cone hit a two-out, walk-off single in the ninth inning, and for the second straight night, the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, staged a late comeback against the Corpus Christi Hooks in a 4-3 win at Dr Pepper Ballpark on Saturday night in front of a season-high 10,004 fans.
The Riders (17-4) trailed 3-1 entering their last turn at-bat, but pieced together a rally against Corpus Christi (9-12) reliever Brendan McCurry (0-1). With the bases-loaded and two outs, Isiah Kiner-Falefa was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, and Chris Gimenez walked on four pitches to tie the game at three. That left it up to Cone, who worked the count full, before sending a soft line drive just past the reach of third baseman Jack Mayfield to walk it off.
The RoughRiders took an early lead in the second after scoring an unearned run against Hooks starter Edison Frias, who did not allow an earned run in his five innings of work. Corpus Christi gave him some run support in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run off the bat of Chase McDonald that gave the Hooks at 2-1 lead. It was McDonald's second home run of the series, and his seventh and eighth RBI in the first two games. The long ball came off starter Frank Lopez, who allowed just three hits and two runs in six innings.
Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton began his rehabilitation assignment with the Riders, starting in left field. Hamilton flied out to right field in the first and reached base on an error in the third, before Cone took his place in left field in the top of the fifth.
Ryan Cordell finished 2-for-3 with a walk, and extended his hitting streak to 16 games, while pushing his on-base streak to 21 contests.
Saturday's win marked the second straight night with a late comeback for Frisco, after the Riders overcame a late four-run deficit with a five-run eighth inning Friday night against the Hooks.
