Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals dropped the opening home game of their second-half schedule, as the Frisco RoughRiders took the opening game of a three-game set with a 5-3 win in ten innings on Thursday night. A sell-out crowd at Hammons Field watched as Frisco scored five unanswered runs, including two in the ninth to tie and two in the tenth to take the lead for good.

Dustin Majewski's two-run homer off Jonathan Mikrut in the ninth inning evened the game at 3-3. Ben Harrison put the Riders ahead to stay with a two-out double in the tenth off Mikrut (2-3).

The late Frisco rally spoiled the best outing of Cards' starter Adam Ottavino's season. The right-hander fired six scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit.

Ottavino left with a 3-0 lead, thanks to three Springfield runs in the bottom of the sixth. Frisco starter Michael Schlact had matched Ottavino until the sixth, tossing five scoreless frames. The first four Cards to bat in the sixth all recorded a hit though, putting Springfield on the board. Allen Craig knocked in Jon Jay with an RBI double, putting the Redbirds in front 1-0. Craig scored on an RBI single from Mark Shorey, making it 2-0. Andrew Brown's bloop-single down the right field line scored Shorey to give Springfield a 3-0 advantage.

That lead stood until the eighth, when Frisco got their first run. Marco Gonzalez walked Thomas Berkery to open the inning. With two outs, Elvis Andrus singled off Cards' reliever Kyle Sadlowski to score Berkery, making it a two-run game at 3-1.

Majewski's third home run followed Ben Harrison's lead-off single in the ninth, tying the game at 3-3. With two outs in the tenth, Mikrut walked back-to-back hitters, then gave up Harrison's two-run game-winning double.

The Cards went 1-2-3 in the tenth, as Joselo Diaz picked up his third save of the year. Frisco reliever Andrew Laughter (1-1) picked up the win with two scoreless frames.

Springfield (3-3) will send Adam Daniels (1-1) to the hill on Friday night, as he takes on Frisco right-hander Tommy Hunter (3-2). Friday night is another AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Display. Someone is also going to win a Car-Fi Stereo Package, as part of the Hardee's Star of the Game promotion. Game time on Friday is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm. Don't forget that the Cards are home through Tuesday, taking on the Frisco RoughRiders and the Midland RockHounds, as part of the six-game home stand. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
