 York Revolution

Revs Win Opening Series with 3-2 Victory

April 24, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

On an opening weekend that featured four close, low-scoring contests, the York Revolution took three out of four from the New Britain Bees, winning Sunday afternoon's finale 3-2 at New Britain Stadium. Following Monday's off day, the Revs will continue their season-opening road stretch to Somerset on Tuesday night, before opening the home schedule at PeoplesBank Park on Thursday evening against the Sugar Land Skeeters.

For the second consecutive game, three runs proved to be enough offense for the Revolution thanks to outstanding efforts on the mound.

York grabbed the initial lead in the top of the third inning, as Joel Guzman ripped a two-out RBI single to left, plating Michael Rockett who had singled earlier in the frame. The Revs added another run in the fourth, perfectly manufactured as Isaias Tejeda took a leadoff walk, James Simmons singled to right on a hit-and-run, and Salvador Paniagua skied a sac fly to left to make it 2-0.

That came in support of starting pitcher James Simmons (1-0) who was brilliant in his season debut. The righty allowed just three baserunners, all on singles, over six shutout innings, striking out six and walking none.

New Britain threatened in the late innings. Anthony Hewitt cut the lead in half, connecting on the first home run in Bees history, a solo shot to left with two outs in the seventh.

The Revs recouped that run in the eighth, as Jason Repko lined a two-out RBI single to left field for a 3-1 lead.

The Bees again threatened, as Craig Maddox greeted closer Mike DeMark with a first pitch RBI single up the middle, trimming the lead to 3-2. With runners at the corners, DeMark retired Kevin Rivers with a broken bat bloop pop up, run down by second baseman Bryan Pounds in shallow right field to keep the lead intact.

DeMark stranded the tying run at third base for the second straight inning to complete the four-out save. After Jovan Rosa led off the home ninth with a single, DeMark struck out Hewitt for the first out. James Skelton then bounced into a potential game-ending double play at first base, but after stepping on the bag for the second out, Telvin Nash's throw to second base sailed slightly high and into left field, allowing Rosa to take third. DeMark secured his third save, however, retiring Brandon Chaves on a fly out to shallow center to end it.

Bees starter Josh Zeid (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run in 2.2 innings. The right-hander was dominant early, striking out four straight at one point and six batters total.

Notes: Already the league's first to record multiple saves on the season, DeMark is the quickest to three saves in a season in Revolution history. The previous fastest to three saves was Adam Thomas who did it in 12 team games in 2007. Of York's six runs over the last two games, four have scored with two outs. Repko has hit safely in all four games to begin the season. The highest single-game run total for either team in the series was York's four runs on Opening Night. The Revs outscored the Bees 10-7 over the four games. Sunday marked the third one-run game of the series, as the largest margin was two runs in York's 3-1 win on Saturday night. With six shutout innings of three-hit ball from Simmons, Revs starting pitchers have allowed just three runs on 10 hits in 20.0 innings through four contests. First pitch for Tuesday's opener at Somerset is set for 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app with Darrell Henry on the call beginning at 6:45 p.m.
