Revs Rise To The Occasion, Winning On An Emotional Night In York

May 17, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Emotions were flying high at Sovereign Bank Stadium as the York Revolution honored fallen Loganville Fire Chief Rodney Miller on Emergency Responders Night, and the Revs rose to the occasion, defeating the Lancaster Barnstormers 6-4 in front of 5,294 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Friday evening. The Revs have now won a season-high-tying three consecutive games while evening this year's "War of the Roses" series at 2-2, and will go for a fourth straight win on Saturday night when they host the Barnstormers at 6:30 p.m.

The Revs followed a similar formula on Friday night as they had used the previous two victories, putting together a big inning early in the game, and then hanging on late.

York scored five times in the second inning to build an early lead, taking advantage of four walks in the inning by Lancaster starter Dwayne Pollok (3-1), with the big hits coming on a James Shanks two-run double to right, and a three-run triple to deep right-center by Andres Perez. The hit for Shanks was his 373rd in a Revolution uniform, one shy of tying Scott Grimes' all-time club record. The Revs added one more run in the third when Jeff Fiorentino led off with a double to left-center and scored on a wild pitch.

Revs starter Brett Tomko was magnificent early in the game, carrying a no-hitter through 5.1 innings before allowing a single to ninth place hitter Gustavo Molina. Tomko's only baserunner allowed up to that point came on a walk to Molina in the third inning. Tomko (1-3) had previously held a no-hit bid through 6.1 innings in his first start of the season, and the victim of poor run support finally earned his first win on Friday night.

The Barnstormers broke up the shutout with a sacrifice fly to deep center by Daryle Ward in the seventh. Molina then launched a two-run homer to left in the eighth, cutting the lead to 6-3. Reliever Rommie Lewis spelled Tomko and stranded two runners, however, recording all three outs in the eighth inning.

Juan Rincon fell into a bases loaded jam to begin the ninth, but came back to retire Molina on a double play ball that produced a run, before ending the game with a groundout to first from Jerry Owens, securing his fourth save.

The Revs (15-13) match a season-best at two games above .500 overall, and have now won four of their last five contests. Lancaster drops to 12-15 for the season, having lost four of its last five.

York 's Chris Cody (2-1, 4.55) will face Brian Grening (0-1, 2.35) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. It is Bike Night, an Ettline Scratch-Off Saturday, and the night concludes with Postgame Fireworks presented by Smart Magazine. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
