Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

FISHKILL, NY - Hudson Valley's pitching staff showed why it is the best staff in the New York-Penn League Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium, holding the Connecticut Tigers to one hit and striking out 13 batters in a 4-0 win. The victory extended the Renegades win streak to nine games and gave the team their seventh sweep of a series this season. It was also the third time this season Hudson Valley pitchers have held an opponent to one hit.

The first-half of the game was sluggish as starters Travis Ott of Hudson Valley and Gregory Soto of Connecticut combined for 13 strikeouts and seven walks. The Renegades also had two men thrown out at the plate in the third, which kept the game scoreless.

Hudson Valley finally broke the goose-egged deadlock in the fifth. With one out, shortstop Bill Pujols drew a leadoff walk, then stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He would score with two outs as leftfielder Garrett Whitley tripled to left, on a ball overrun by Tigers leftfielder Jacob Robson, to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.

The home team would add to its lead in the sixth. Third baseman Jon Popadics started the inning with a bunt single to third, then went to second on a groundout. With two away, catcher Chris Betts launched a ground-rule double to left-center to score Popadics and make the score 2-0.

The Renegades put the game away with another two runs in the eighth. Pujols started the inning with a walk before scoring on an RBI triple to right by centerfielder Jake Fraley. Two batters later, Fraley scored on an RBI double to left by second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni who extended his hitting streak to nine.

That was all Hudson Valley's pitchers would need as the top pitching staff in the New York-Penn League held Connecticut to one hit. Robson doubled in the first as the second batter of the game, providing the only offense of the night for the Tigers.

Getting the win for the Renegades was Ott (6-0) who allowed that one hit while pitching five scoreless frames. He also struck out seven and walked four. The loss went to Soto (3-2) after the southpaw gave up a run in 4.2 innings on four hits. In addition, the Tigers starter walked three and struck out six.

Hudson Valley had 10 hits for the ballgame including two apiece from Mastrobuoni and Popadics. Mastrobuoni had an RBI while Popadics scored a run and stole a base.

Hudson Valley hits the road for the first of a three-game series with the Aberdeen Ironbirds on Friday. First-pitch is slated for 7:05. Right-hander Adrian Navas (3-2, 2.19 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Renegades against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Ironbirds. The Renegades return home next Thursday, September 1st to kick off the final regular-season home series of the season against the Vermont Lake Monsters.
