Renegades Make Fast Work of Ironbirds

Hudson Valley Moves 1.5 Games Back in Wild Card Standings

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - In a game that lasted a season-low two hours and seven minutes, the Hudson Valley Renegades took the first game of a crucial three-game series from the Aberdeen Ironbirds 2-1 Saturday night from Dutchess Stadium. With the win Hudson Valley now sits only 1.5 games behind the Ironbirds for first-place in the New York-Penn League ' s wild card standings.

The scoring started for the Renegades in the first. Second baseman Vidal Brujan started the inning with an infield single to second. An errant pickoff attempt by Ironbirds starting pitcher Cameron Bishop allowed Brujan to move to second. With nobody out, he went to third on a wild pitch. With runners at the corners and no one out, shortstop Taylor Walls dribbled a ball in front of the plate. Aberdeen catcher Jean Carrillo fired to first for the out, but as soon as he released the ball Brujan took off for home and just beat the return throw from first baseman Ryan Ripken to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead.

Aberdeen got the run back in the third. With one out, centerfielder Zach Jarrett grounded an infield single to short. He went to third on a lined double to right by second baseman Kirvin Moesquit. Shortstop Mason McCoy came to the plate next and hit a routine groundout to short to score Jarrett and tie the game at one.

Things stayed that way until the fifth when Hudson Valley retook the lead. With two out and nobody aboard, third baseman Deion Tansel lined a single into center. Tansel stole second before Brujan followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Centerfielder Carl Chester came up next and blooped a single into right-centerfield, just beyond the reach of Moesquit to score Tansel from second and give the Renegades a 2-1 lead.

That was all the Renegades needed as Hudson Valley pitchers were sensational as they combined to strike out 13 Ironbirds. Getting the win was starter Tobias Myers (4-2) who allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings. He also walked one and struck out eight. Taking the tough-luck loss for Aberdeen was Bishop (0-1) who allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in six innings of work. He also walked two and struck out four.

Hudson Valley relievers Blake Pflughaupt, Eduard Rosillo, and Zack Mozingo combined to allow only one hit over the final 3.1 innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Mozingo pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season.

Each team had only four hits. Tansel led the way for Hudson Valley by going 2-2 with two singles, a stolen base, and a run scored. Nobody had more than one hit for Aberdeen.

The Renegades continue their three-game set with the Ironbirds tomorrow. First-pitch is set for 5:05. Hudson Valley will trot out southpaw Brendan McKay (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Starting for the Ironbirds will be righty Brenan Hanifee (6-2, 2.49 ERA). Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
