Ontario Reign News Release

Ontario, CA - The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), visit the San Diego Gulls tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California to open the 2016-17 regular season. Tonight is the first of 12 regular-season meetings between the two teams.

Three-Game Series to Start:

The Reign and Gulls unofficially opened the 2016-17 season with a pair of preseason contests against each other. Last week Thursday at Citizens Business Bank Arena, the Gulls skated away with a 4-3 shootout victory and took a 4-1 victory on Monday at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The Reign are 0-2-0-2 all-time in the preseason against the Gulls.

Rivalry Renewed:

Over 12 heated regular-season meetings last season, the Reign went 4-6-1-1 against the Gulls and 2-2-1-1 at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Defenseman Vincent LoVerde (one goal, six assists) tied the Reign team lead with Adrian Kempe (five goals, two assists) with seven points against the Gulls.

Old Friends:

In addition to the regular season, the Reign and Gulls clashed twice in the preseason last year (0-1-0-1) and the Pacific Division Finals of the Calder Cup Playoffs (Reign won best-of-seven series 4-1).

Gulls Off to Fast Start:

Last night, the Gulls opened their new season with a 5-3 victory over the Tucson Roadrunners at Valley View Casino Center. Forward Corey Tropp scored a goal and two assists and forward Antoine Laganiere added two tallies. The Gulls, who held the third-best power play last season (20.8 percent), went 2-for-6 on the man advantage against the Roadrunners.
