Ontario Reign News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, defending Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, started off the 2012-13 season with a 2-1 victory on the road on Friday night against the Stockton Thunder before 5,635 at Stockton Arena.

There was good end-to-end play between the teams in the first period and that tempo would carry on throughout the game. Just 42 seconds into play Stockton took a penalty for hooking; the Reign made the most of the man-advantage with a power-play goal from the right circle by Vincent LoVerde. Kyle Kraemer and Dan DaSilva earned their first points of the season on the goal with an assist apiece.

Stockton's Philippe Cornet netted an equalizer early in the second frame while on the power play. About a minute and a half later, Colton Yellow Horn stole the puck from the Stockton defense and scored through the five-hole of Tyler Bunz to regain the lead for the Reign. Toward the end of the period both teams became a bit more physical and hard-hitting.

Ontario held off the Thunder for the remainder of the game. Each team had five power-play opportunities throughout the contest each converting just one. Returning Reign goaltender, JF Berube, had some great saves stopping 18 of 19 shots. Rookie goaltender, Bunz, took the loss with 23 saves on 25 shots.

Derek Couture made his first appearance as the Reign's 2012-13 Captain tonight. Defenseman Paul Mara and right winger Brady Calla wore the "A" as they were named Alternate Captains for the squad. Three Stars: 1. ONT - Colton Yellow Horn 2. STK - Philippe Cornet 3. ONT - JF Berube Click here for the box score.
