Reid's 50 Saves Propel Alaska

November 1, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL) - Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Scott Reid stopped the last 44 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, then turned aside the last four Idaho attempts in the shootout as Alaska snapped a three-game slide with a 3-2 win over the Steelheads before 4,987 at Sullivan Arena.

For the third consecutive game, the Aces were out-shot by a healthy margin (52-24), but Reid settled down after a shaky start and emerged as the primary reason that Alaska became the first team to put a blemish on Idaho's previously perfect record. Now 6-0-1, the Steelheads face the Aces (5-3) in the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow at 5:05 p.m., followed by a postgame "Skate with the Aces," presented by Fred Meyer. The game will be carried live on the flagship home of Alaska pro hockey, KFQD 750 AM.

As they had in Friday's 5-3 loss, the Aces fell behind 2-0 in the first period, managing just one shot over the first 12 minutes of the game while Mark Derlago followed his own shot for an unassisted goal at 1:25 and Trevor Ludwig beat Reid with a wrist shot directly off a face-off eight minutes later. Alaska gradually found its game legs and reeled off the last seven shots of the period, including Eric Boguniecki's second goal in as many nights with 2:47 left in the frame with the teams skating four-on-four.

Still leading by a goal, Idaho out-shot he home team 14-5 in a scoreless second period. With the teams again skating four-on-four early in the third, Boguniecki found a streaking Tyson Marsh in the left circle. Marsh's shot caromed off the back of Steelhead defenseman Mike Stuart's skate and past goalie Richard Bachman for the equalizer at 3:19. Idaho wasted a subsequent five-on-three power play opportunity (its second such failure of the game) and two more chances with the man advantage in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Reid made 23 saves in the third period alone, as the Steelheads out-shot the Aces 42-14 after the opening 20 minutes.

After a scoreless overtime, Derlago and Tyler Spurgeon scored on backhanders five-hole against Reid while Alaska came up empty in the first two rounds against Bachman. But goals by Alexandre Imbeault and ex-Steelhead Lance Galbraith in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, set the stage for rookie Jack Combs, who buried the game-winner on a backhander in the sixth round. Idaho finished 0-8 on the power play, while the Aces went scoreless in four chances.
