Shark Snap Shot:

The Worcester Sharks chomped one out of a possible six points last week to wrap up their 5th season of hockey in Worcester with 85 points (36-31-4-9). The Sharks finished the season 0-2-0-1 after a 2-1 shootout loss to the Pirates in the home finale on Tuesday followed by back-to-back losses to the Checkers in Charlotte on Friday and Saturday. Worcester was eliminated from playoff contention after the 2-1 loss in game #79 to the Checkers on Friday night.

4.5.11 - Worcester 1 - Portland 2 - SOL - DCU Center

The Sharks lost to the Portland Pirates 2-1 in the shootout in the last regular season home game at the DCU Center on Tuesday night. T.J. Trevelyan was the only goal scorer for the Sharks while Harri Sateri made 30 saves in the shootout loss. 20-year-old and San Jose Sharks draft selection Taylor Doherty made his professional debut for the Sharks recording two shots on net.

4.8.11 - Worcester 1 - Charlotte 2 - L - Time Warner Cable Arena

The Sharks dropped a narrow 2-1 decision vs. the Checkers at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte on Friday night. With the loss and the win by the CT Whale in Bridgeport, the Sharks were eliminated from the Calder Cup playoff contention. John McCarthy (7th) was the only goal scorer for the Sharks while Harri Sateri made 25 saves in his third straight start in the net for Worcester.

4.9.11 - Worcester 2 - Charlotte 6 - L - Time Warner Cable Arena

The Sharks closed out the regular season with a 6-2 loss vs. the Checkers at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte on Saturday night. Jamie McGinn (9th) and Cory Quirk (4th) scored for the Sharks while Carter Hutton made 28 saves in the net for Worcester. Defenseman Sena Acolatse made his professional debut for the Sharks in the loss.

Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks finished swimming in 4th place with 85 points (36-31-4-9) in the Atlantic Division through 80 games, which was 18 points behind the first place Portland Pirates, 13 points behind the 2nd place Manchester Monarchs, and 3 points behind the 3rd place CT Whale. The Sharks led the 5th place Bruins by 3 points, 10 points better than the Falcons, followed by the 7th place Sound Tigers with 71 points to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

400 WINS + and 1000 + games...

*400 WINS!....With the 4-1 victory vs. Springfield on November 1, 2009, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.

*1000 GAMES... With the 3-1 victory at Springfield on January 14, 2011, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 1,000 games plateau.

*Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (13th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record is now: 478-433 -48 -44 -37. (W-L-T-OTL-SOL)

*In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.

*Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 324 of the 478 victories (68%)... Coach Cunniff filled in for Roy in a 3-2SOW in Springfield on December 29, 2010 as coach Sommer was in California attending his father's funeral.

*Captains for the 2010-11 season: Jay Leach was the captain before he was traded to New Jersey on Feb 9th and Mike Moore was named the Sharks 4th captain in team history on Feb 11th. Assistant Captains on the road: Jonathan Cheechoo (1st year) and Nick Petrecki (1st year). Assistant Captains at home: Andrew Desjardins (1st year) and Sean Sullivan (1st year)... Dan DaSilva, Cory Quirk, Joe Loprieno, Frazer McLaren, and John McCarthy have also worn the assistant captain "A".

*From east to west..... The Worcester Sharks had 13 different players (36 call-ups) receive at least one call up this season to San Jose... Currently; Justin Braun, Brandon Mashinter, Andrew Desjardins, Jamie McGinn, Benn Ferriero, Logan Couture, Jason Demers, Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Marc-Edourd Vlasic, and Doug Murray are all former Worcester Sharks that are currently playing with the San Jose Sharks.

*Score first... the Sharks scored FIRST 39 times in 80 games this season (29-8-1-1); Benn Ferriero (5) Jonathan Cheechoo (4), Kevin Henderson (4), T.J. *Shootout Hero... Dan DaSilva led the Sharks in the shootout this season. DD went 4-for-9 in the shootout with two game winners. DaSilva was the only Sharks player to dress in all 80 games this season for Worcester and was named the Sharks UnSung Hero this season.

*14 Shootouts... The Sharks participated in a team record 14 shootouts this season. Worcester had a 5-9 record in the shootout. Worcester had a 25.0% (18-for-72) scoring proficiency in the shootout 35.7% (25-for-70) in goals allowed.

*21 OT games... Worcester was involved in 21 overtime games this season, breaking the club record of 20, accomplished in 06-07 and 07-08.

*Sullivan Scores... Sharks defenseman Sean Sullivan had 12 goals (2 GWG) this season from the Sharks blue line. The 27-year-old from Boston, MA had 12 goals and 49 points in San Antonio last season. Sean ranks 5th on the Sharks with 35 points this season. Sullivan was featured on Sports Center as the #4 play of the top ten countdown for his hip check on Jason Pitton on Jan 22 (BRI): Watch HERE.

*Give me Moore... #8 has played 192 games in a Worcester Sharks jersey and has compiled 52 points (10-42-52) and 278 penalty minutes. His +33 is 4th best in Sharks history. He recorded his first professional two goal game on November 14 vs. Norfolk and was the #1 star. Moore scored his first NHL goal in his 2nd NHL game in a 4-3OTL in Colorado on November 17th. Mike scored at 9:14 of the 2nd period on a slap shot assisted by Dany Heatley on Peter Budaj to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. He has also been the Sharks Man of the Year for the previous two seasons for his continued work in the Worcester community. Moore was named the 4th captain in Sharks history on Feb 11th before the Sharks defeated the Falcons 5-0 in Albany.

*Sheriff back in town... Frazer McLaren returned to Worcester on Nov 20 after beginning the season with the San Jose Sharks. McLaren ranks 2nd all time in penalty minutes by a Worcester Sharks player with 417 (Staubitz 462). The Sherriff missed 21 games due to a lower body injury before returning to the lineup on January 11 vs. Albany.

*Sharks in the Atlantic... the Sharks had a 29-20-4-7 record against Atlantic Division prey this season.

*Good when leading... the Sharks had a 21-5-1-1 when leading after the 1st period of play and a 28-1-1-1 when leading after the 2nd period of play this season.

*Close encounters... the Sharks won for the first time at home by three goals or more in a 5-2 victory over the Monarchs on Feb 27. At home, the Sharks are 12-2-2-5 in one goal games, 7-6-0-0 in two goal games, and 1-5-0-0 in three + goal games.

*Outshot but not outscored.... Worcester is 16-11-1-2 when they got outshot during a game.

*Reunion of sorts...Jonathan Cheechoo returned to the Sharks organization in Worcester and once again played for head coach Roy Sommer.... Coach Sommer coached Cheechoo in Kentucky and Cleveland in the AHL before his NHL days. Before this season, Cheechoo had 56-63-119pts in 137 games under Coach Sommer. "Cheech" ranked 1st in Worcester with 47 points (18-29-47) in 55 games this season. Jonathan missed the last 20 games due to injury.

*7 goalies... The Sharks used a franchise record 7 different goaltenders this season. (Stalock 41gp, Hutton 22gp, Gill 1gp, Machesney 6gp, Jakaitis 3gp, Sexsmith 6gp, and Sateri 7gp)

*50 players... the Sharks set a franchise record with 50 players on their roster this season. Sena Acolatse was #50.

*Young Guns... the Sharks dressed 22 rookies, including three from UMASS-Amherst (Braun, Irwin, and Marcou) and two from UMASS-Lowell (Hutton and Schaus).

*Super Sunday... the Sharks went 14-4-0-2 on Sunday afternoon games this season... including an 9-2-0-2 record at the DCU Center.

*Home/Away goals... the Sharks scored 104 goals at home and allowed 115 at the DCU Center.... while scoring 106 goals on the road and allowing 130 goals on the road.

*Good Starts... Worcester outscored their opponents 68-57 (+11) in the first period, 69-77 (-8) in the 2nd period, but outscored 65-98 (-33) in the third period.

*I'll take a draft... 12 Worcester Sharks players were drafted by the San Jose Sharks. (Braun, Cheechoo, Doherty, Lucia, McCarthy, McGinn, McLaren, Petrecki, Sexsmith, Sateri, Stalock, Wingels)

*Crazed Rat grabs 30... with his game winning goal on Nov 21st vs. the Falcons, Andrew Desjardins became the 9th player in franchise history to score 30 goals. Desjardins skated in his 200th game as a Shark on February 5 vs. the Bruins and picked up a fighting major. Desjardins was named the Worcester Sharks MVP this season.

*Massachusetts... The Sharks had FIVE players born and raised in Massachusetts (Sean Sullivan - Boston, Cory Quirk - Brockton, Benn Ferriero - Essex, John McCarthy - Andover, and Jon Landry - Lexington)

*Packing them in... the Sharks drew 33,593 fans during the six game home stand which concluded on February 5 at the DCU Center (average of 5,599). The Sharks 7,273 attendance on Jan 29 pushed them over the 750,000 mark in four + seasons in Worcester.

*All 5 years... Jamie McGinn became the first player in Worcester Sharks history to dress in at least one game in the first five seasons with the Worcester Sharks when he played on January 28 vs. the Sound Tigers. The 22-year-old forward from Fergus, Ontario has played in 116 games for Worcester (36-38-74) and 96 penalty minutes.

*Jamie loves the Bruins.... 11 of the 36 AHL goals scored by Jamie McGinn have come against the Bruins... and all four of his AHL playoff goals have come against Providence.

*Breaking down the scoring... The Sharks scored 210 goals this season... 57 on the power play, 131 even strength goals, 7 shorthanded tallies, 5 shootout goals, and 6 empty net goals.

*Special Teams... Worcester finished 26th in the AHL on the PK at 80.2% (60-for-303) and 21st in the AHL on the power play with a 17.0% conversion rating (57-for-336). The Sharks scored 7 shorthanded goals and have allowed 13 shorthanded tallies.

*7 shorties... the Sharks scored 7 shorthanded goals this season, with 5 of them coming at home. Worcester is 7-0-0-0 in those games. Jamie McGinn has 2 while Andrew Desjardins, Kevin Henderson, Tommy Wingels, John McCarthy, and Patrick Davis have the others.

*Alex Stalock hits 100 games.... Stalock became just the 2nd Sharks goaltender to dress in 100 games on January 28 joining Thomas Greiss... Alex is 57-36-6 for the Sharks in those 100 games.

*Mr. Dependable.... Andrew Desjardins had dressed in 188 straight games for Worcester breaking the record held by Derek Joslin (114 games).... Desjardins had the 2nd longest streak in the AHL (Nick Dodge in Charlotte) before his first NHL recall on January 2, 2011.

*Five for fighting...The Sharks had 81 fighting majors (franchise record) this season good for 12th in the AHL... 22 different players dropped the mitts this season for the Sharks this season: (Garet Hunt 3, Brandon Mashinter 10, Sean Sullivan 4, Jay Leach 5, Nick Petrecki 11, Andrew Desjardins 7, Dan DaSilva 4, Jason Pitton 1, Joe Loprieno 3, Kevin Henderson 3, David Marshall 1, Erick Lizon 3, Mike Moore 4. The San Jose Sharks finished with a 48-25-9 record with 105 points and in 1st place in the Pacific Division, 6 points ahead of the Anaheim Ducks. The San Jose Sharks finished 2nd in the Western Conference and will play the #7 seed LA Kings in the first round.

Logan Couture (32-24-56) has ripped it up in his first full season in San Jose and took home the SJ Sharks rookie of the year award. Logan finished 2nd on the team with 32 goals and 2nd with 8 game winning goals. Former Worcester Sharks; Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Torrey Mitchell, and John McCarthy have all scored goals for San Jose. Justin Braun had 11 points (2-9-11) in 28 games, Brandon Mashinter had no points and three fights in 13 games and Andrew Desjardins had three points (1-2-3) in 17 games.

The Stockton Thunder finished 37-23-5-7 with 86 points in 72 games good for 2nd place in the Pacific Division in the ECHL. Defenseman Ryan Constant (AHL Contract), Jody Pederson (AHL contract), and Tyson Sexsmith (NHL contract) are currently assigned to Stockton. The Thunder lost in the first round of the Kelly Cup playoffs 3 games-to-1.
