Refsnyder Leads RiverDogs to 4-1 Victory

CHARLESTON, SC - Second baseman Rob Refsnyder led the Charleston RiverDogs to a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over the Rome Braves. Refsnyder finished 3-for-4 with two singles, a triple and two RBI's. With the victory, Charleston improves to 8-5 in South Atlantic League play and a share for first place. Wednesday was the first of two Education Days at The Joe this year and drew 4,941 fans through the turnstiles at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Centerfielder Taylor Dugas got the first inning started by taking a hit-by-pitch. He would later score the first run of the ballgame on a RBI single by Rob Refsnyder .

After two quick innings, the RiverDogs would get back on the scoreboard with their second run of the game. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Reymond Nunez got his first hit of the season as he tripled down the right field line. Nunez scored on an RBI double from the next batter Nick McCoy. Charleston added another run in the seventh on an RBI single from Rob Refsnyder, and added their final run in the eighth on a RBI single from Taylor Dugas .

Starter Gabe Encinas threw his third consecutive quality start as he picked up the victory Wednesday moving to 2-0 on the season. Encinas went five innings, allowed no runs on three hits, walked three and struck out five. Alex Smith threw three innings of relief for Gabe Encinas, and Taylor Garrison shut the door on the Braves with a spotless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

Rome starter Williams Perez was impressive as well. Perez lasted 5.1 innings, allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He was pegged with the loss, dropping his record to 2-1. Rome was led by their rightfielder, Felix Marte who finished the afternoon going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles and a run scored. Marte scored Rome's lone run on a passed ball.

Charleston will now hit the road for a quick four-game weekend set in Hickory, North Carolina. Game one is scheduled for 7:05pm Thursday. Charleston will send RHP Vicente Campos (0-0, 6.00 ERA) to toe the rubber as he faces off against fellow RHP Eric Brooks (0-0, 8.22 ERA) for the Crawdads. BALLPARK FUN: It was the first of two education days at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. Thousands of students from Lowcountry schools were in attendance on a beautiful sunny day at The Joe.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs hit the road for a quick four-game road trip to Hickory, North Carolina to face the Hickory Crawdads starting Thursday, but return home to The Joe next Tuesday to start a seven-game homestand .
